Regular Crashes - nvwgf2umx.dll
Hello everyone!

I bought GTA 5 just a couple of days ago when it was on sale. Game worked fine at first but then started to crash regularly. Sometimes it crashes right away and sometimes I am able to play for 5-10 minutes before the crash occurs. Every time it crashes I am met with the same error in Windows Event Viewer.

Windows Event Viewer Log
Faulting application name: GTA5.exe, version: 1.0.877.1, time stamp: 0x57eb8de4 Faulting module name: nvwgf2umx.dll, version: 21.21.13.7570, time stamp: 0x580fb66a Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000052e3d1 Faulting process id: 0xa18 Faulting application start time: 0x01d2353df9317720 Faulting application path: D:\Steam Games\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V\GTA5.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_848dea456d3c865e\nvwgf2umx.dll Report Id: 6711a0df-6672-4de3-b70e-7d3487b5c70d Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:

Now, here is a list of solutions I have tried:
  • Reinstalled GTA5 (1 time on SSD & 2 times on HDD)
  • Reinstalled Graphics Driver
  • Tried using an older Graphics Driver
  • Tried using DDU from Guru3D when reinstalling drivers
  • Reinstalled DirectX
  • Reinstalled .NET Framework
  • Ran "sfc /scannow" in Admin CMD
  • Reinstalled operating system (Win10)
  • Disabled all services(except essential Nvidia and Miscrosoft services)
  • Removed the faulty file
  • Replaced the faulty file
  • Changed settings in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Tried using DirectX 10.1 instead of 11
  • Tried lowering graphics settings
  • Verified game files trough Steam
  • Tested the game without Steam Overlay
  • Tested game without Shadow Play
  • Tested game without GeForce Experience installed
  • Tried deleting GTA5 config files and restarting (as someone suggested in Steam Forums)
  • Tried playing with both Borderless Window and Fullscreen
  • Tried disabling Nvidia Audio Devices in Device Manager

I have spent so much time googling this problem and trying to find a fix that it wouldn't surprise me if I have tried every solution on every link for the first 10 pages of the Google search.

I also contacted Nvidia support for troubleshooting and they couldn't find any problem(not that they were very helpful) with my setup or drivers and suggested that there obviously is a problem with the game itself(because all other games I have work without any issues). After that I contacted Rockstar support and am now waiting for an answer. A friend suggested asking around these forums as well so here I am.

Hopefully one of you have had the same problem and found a fix for it. I have searched around the forums and found similar issues and tried the fixes to no avail. Most threads also seem to just die before any solution is presented.

Here are my system specs:

Thanks!

Thanks for the link but that thread shows up in one of the top Google searches for this problem. Ive gone trough every suggestion in the thread without progress.

You said reinstalled drivers - how did you do this? I would suggest DDUsafemode if you haven't.

I would also disable any nvidia audio devices in devicemanager (to help rule out other oddballs). (or actually - anything in there that isn't directly AND only your audio card)
(Yes - this is going to kill hdmi audio - its just a test, gtav does have issues with multiple audio)

If haven't done as well, I would also open msconfig / services tab - hide ms services - disable everything else. And- disable anything in the startup tab of taskmanager too.

If you don't want to do that - aleast open services.msc -
and disable anything nvidia except for the basic display driver.
And, incase you have razer anything - stop/disable/uninstall all of that too.

And - did you/have you used mods? If so - uninstalling/reinstalling gtav won't clean those-
They need to be manually removed - or the entire gtav folder outright deleted. That process also should of theoretically reinstalled directx/vcredists from the _commonredist folder.

Just mentioning things I don't see in your post, or other things left unanswered. I'd almost say ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc but you've already redone win10 - not sure what order you did everything but that would of purged quite a bit - in theory atleast.

Hey there!

Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to disable Nvidia audio Devices and try playing again. Will report back as soon as I know if it is working.

I will not try your other suggestions because I have already tried them(forgot to add in list but I will do it now). Nvidia support suggested I do exactly what you are suggesting but it didnt work.

Also, I have never used any kind of mod.

Hey, I just returned from the game. Got the same crash again after disabling Nvidia Audio Devices in Device manager, so that did not work. Adding it to the list.

Thanks for trying to help though, if you have any more suggestions keep them coming. :)

Like I said - not sure what order you did some of that stuff - especially the win10 reinstall.
Was win10 fully updated before you loaded the new gpu drivers / directx / vcredists?
Or did you load it - load those - then windows updated (and overwrote some files)?
It wouldn't be the first time that windows updates borked stuff.

There are also system requirements for social club itself - that you could verify were installed.

The rest of anything I'd say you've already done in some fashion.
(my other post was slightly mod'd before/during your response)

Other things to check - game dvr in win10 - usually shows up as lag though.
Is this crash consistant with... anything you are doing?

I know the c000005 error "usually" is fixed directly by fix'n the file in the report.
Dinner time back later~

Reinstalling Windows 10 was my last resort so I made sure everything was done in the correct order. Updated and installed all updates for Windows first and afterwards installed the fresh drivers.

I have not tried verifying Social Club, assumed that was unnecessary because i have reinstalled the whole game several times. I will try doing this too though, just to be sure.

What is Game DVR?

The crash does not seem to be consistent with anything special in game. Although it crashes more while driving(seems to at least), I would just assume this is because I spend more time driving than not.

Fixing the file was not so easy. It is used by Windows Explorer and is undeletable while some processes are running. I have managed to replace it though, both manually and with driver installers but it did nothing.

I tried to find out how to verify Social Club files but I have no idea how to do this. Everytime i start the game trough steam it just goes past the launcher and straight into the game. If i launch the launcher from the GTA directory it does the same thing.

People have suggested making a shortcut and adding "-verify" as an option but that did nothing and just keeps launching me into the game.

Just verifying cache on gtav would give you the proper social club installer, vcredist, directx.
(sometimes this doesn't work proper with bad internet, or antivirus/security software interfering)

However, socialclub also has/had previous requirements- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/203458663-Social-Club-DirectX-and-Visual-C-Manual-Download-Links-for-GTAV-PC

Incase you try the social club installer from the link/website - its the top link - not the bottom.

Are you using 2 monitors? I'd try only 1.
Onboard gpu? Disabled? Seems odd the issue would persist after a complete redo.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for trying to help me. I have some good news.

A friend suggested trying to disable the overclock on my CPU and now the game has been running for 2 hours without any crashes.

Feel kind of stupid for not trying that before. The OC has been stress tested and I have never experienced any issues before purchasing GTA5. Also, because the Error Log showed nothing that could be linked to the CPU i never suspected that it could be an issue.

So, if anyone is having the same kind of problem:
Try disabling Overclock on either CPU or GPU. Might just work for you too.

Haha, no comment. ;p
