For example, in Franklin's garage I currently have 1 car, 2 motorcycles and 1 bicycle, and they seem to stay there safely. In Micheal"s I have 2 cars inside it at the moment, again safely.
I "think" each garage can hold 4 vehicles plus unlimited "special" vehicles (I came across a random guide saying so). But I am not sure. So I recommend you experiment with less valuable vehicles and see if they survive a save and restore, and maybe save the nice car in Franklin's garage while you do that.
But it would be nice to find an official answer as to how many and how can you store. Or at least a guide dedicated to car storing in Gta 5.
I know, it is weird. I also thought you could not buy properties until later. Maybe there are special conditions for the 2nd garage of each character.
Edit: and now I bought Michel's garage. Still at the same main story missions, Although I did some of Tonya's and Beverly's side missions.
Unfortunately, once you unlock more than one character the ones you are not using seem to love taking your main car out, driving it, leaving it all over town, and getting it impounded. A royal pain in the rear. Makes me wonder if R* might be Russian, since they seem to have the sick sense of humor (that considers annoying customers fun) combined with great content but done very sloppily that is so common to ex soviet block software companies.
