Yes you can start work on research before you own the thing the research applies to. Remember though you can't choose what you research; its random.

The oppressor is more fun and faster the deluxo is better when it comes to combat

Opressor:
Pros:
-Fastest way of getting from A to B.
-Instant infinite respawn with no cooldowns and right next to you.
-Super agile and can avoid almost all homing missiles.
Cons:
-Needs research if you want it to be more than a great mode of transport.
-Can take some time to learn how to drive well, especially landing on small platforms.

Deluxo:
Pros:
-Very easy to control.
-Can fly, not just glide.
Cons:
-Slow and sluggish.

i find the deluxo to be better during missions, survivability is high, as the AI shooting up at you rarely registers a hit.

i own both, and the opressor has cost me quite a bit of money. since i've lost it in the water more than a few times. in PVP freeroam the opressor takes the win.
