Grand Theft Auto V Legacy
Gta 5 fps drops on gtx 1080!
Recently I have installed a msi gtx 1080 gaming x 8gb, and majority of my games have performed amazingly except for gta 5. In most benchmark tests I see online people were reaching up to 100 fps and over. So I'm shocked to see my game constantly stuttering and only going up to 60 fps and than down to 30 fps. I have seen online a lot of other people are having this issue and saying they need more ram, if I upgraded to 16 gb of ram would I see a difference? Or little to no change.

Specs:
GPU: msi gtx 1080 gaming x 8gb
CPU: i5-6500 3.20 ghz
Hard drive: 1tb solid state
Ram: ddr4 8gb two sticks
PSU: 800 watts

oh hell no?!?!!? everyone is just freaking out if he is having i5 with GTX 1080... why, if he cant afford better, and i5 is enough imo

No one was freaking out except for trek554.

The i5 6500 *is* enough. It doesn't bottleneck any video card out right now.
I came here to make a bold statement.

Even a Sandy-Bridge i5 won't bottleneck an 1080.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKOG_inHmaA Here's some proof to go along with that bold statement. It's of a GTX 1070, but it should be close enough.

EDIT: It's worth noting that the i5 2500k is overclocked to 4.2GHz, it's not much of an overclock though.

Look I really appreciate everyone's help and support. However everyone is saying something different. I just want to establish what the problem is and what I can do to improve/fix this issue. This card was very expensive for me to purchase so I just want to get the best out of it.

if windows and nvidia are updated
what are your game settings and control panel set to
do yo have vsync set to and what monitor / resolution are you playing at
this may help

did you even look at the settings they reccomend or try any out

I don't think they did anything anyone suggested thus far.

You mentioned you play at max settings? That includes everything in the Advanced Graphics options as well? What about your Soft Shadows setting? It's not a "maxable" setting.

The first thing you should try is turning off MSAA and use Frame Scaling Mode on 1.5x. This will result in roughly the same image quality, if not better...but will improve framerate stability, especially in the grassy areas. Frame Scaling Mode is basically SSAA, it's much more efficient, reliable, and less taxing than MSAA. Another thing about MSAA in this game, is that it's buggy and makes grass, transparent.

You should also turn off High Resolution Shadows in the Advanced Graphics options.

If you have Nvidia PCSS shadows as your Soft Shadows video setting, you should put it on Softest or Softer instead. Nvidia PCSS shadows are buggy...having Soft Shadows on this setting will cause stuttering, framerate drops, and shadows popping in and out.

Edit: It almost didn't do anything, just made my fps a little bit more stable but I'm still having drops in the forest and places like that.
If your Grass Quality and Post FX settings are on Ultra, try turning them down to Very High. Also, turn down the sliders in the Advanced Graphics options half-way on both of them. Put it at 50% on each of them.

After you've done that, and kept all the changes I've asked you to make previously, you'll be playing on the same settings I play on. I play at 1440p on those settings, but with 1.25x Frame Scaling Mode instead of 1.5x.

I know for a fact that you should never drop below 60fps with those settings, unless something is wrong with your computer, or you're not telling the whole truth about your video settings...intentional or not.

I added you to help you further, and in real time.

If it is the CPU what type would you recommend to fix this problem, as in how many ghz would make it run smoothly and consitantly.
i7 4790 at default is 3.6 ghz or if you want to overclock of course i7 4790k

i7 4790
It's not the CPU, they do not need a new CPU.

Well I will tell you this; I had an i5 4440 and I've only just got the i7 4790 and I put it in my PC yesterday and now I can run GTA V on Very High with 60fps, with a R9 280X, the i5 4440 was hitting 95-99% on the Task Manager when playing GTA V on Normal/High settings, it is the CPU buddy. OP look on Task Manager whilst playing, if CPU is hitting to the 70-80-90%, around that area usage level it's the CPU. Now on the Task Manager my CPU is around 30-40% and I can play perfectly, I tried yesterday in a tank and it's perfect. The i7 4790 is a really good CPU and I highly recommend it as it will last for a nice amount of time for the future too. I noticed with the i5 that when it hit 95% it would go down to 30fps, it was terrible and unplayable with massive stutters and FPS drops constantly, even with simple tasks such as driving past vehicles.

First of all, you can run GTA V on Very High with 60fps as oposed to what? Also, what resolution?

Secondly, if it's the CPU why was it fine when they had a GTX 980?

Try reading the whole thread, everyone has been through this. I've posted several times proving with video evidence that the GPU is not being bottlenecked. I've even linked a video where a i5 2500K isn't bottlenecking a GTX 1070.

Yes, you will get better fps and be able to play on higher settings with the same fps if you overclock your CPU or upgrade it to a better model...that's common sense. However, that doesn't make the root of this problem, the CPU not being powerful enough, nor bottlenecking the GPU.

FYI, I know you're lying. It's painfully obvious. I've already linked a i5 6600k vs i7 6700k comparison for GTA V in this thread. There's no difference in FPS.

Seeing as the i5-4440 is just an i7-4790 without hyper-threading, 2MB less cache, and 0.5-0.7GHz slower, there's no way upgrading to an i7 4790 would have made much of a difference for you in GTA V unless your CPU was dying. At best, you gained 5-8fps, which is around the "margin of error" territory.

EDIT: The differences between processors listed above are the same for the i5 6660k and i7 6700k. Give or take 0.1GHz.

Thanks for being another "too lazy to read or do research", lying, and thread derailing, stereotypical Steam forum "helper".

I'm totally lying. I would totally spend £300 just to lie on the forums and get 5fps more. Totally. Just do a comparison of the i7 4790 to the i7 6700 and you will get what I mean you ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

You totally couldn't be lying about buying the i7-4790, or lying about having the i5-4440 in the first place. *SARCASM*

Those are two different i7's from two different generations of Intel Processors. It's not a fair comparison, nor does it apply here.

Keep arguing with me without providing any evidence and ignoring most of my points/arguments, though. You'll totally win and be right by doing that! *SARCASM*
no, the game is optimized like ♥♥♥♥, so it will always drop.
