GTA V - Textures loading slowly, "your computer is low on memory" error
Specs:

Intel i5-4670k
ASUS Dual GTX 1060 6GB OC
10 GB RAM
3 TB + 500 GB HDD

On my R9 280x I played GTA V on max settings, MSAA 2x (sometimes 4x, but the fps would drop noticeably) and no high-resolution shadows. Now I'm playing on pretty much the same settings, only MSAA is 4x.

After my ASUS R9 280x died, I decided to buy the GTX 1060. After installing the latest drivers, I tried to run GTA V from Steam, just to find the textures loading very slowly, or not even loading at all. Later on, an error message saying "Your computer is low on memory, close this program" started to appear. When I closed Chrome, the error message didn't appear, but the textures were still not loading. I tried deleting the Rockstar Games folder from my documents, and completely reinstalling the game, but it didn't help at all. Would a system reinstall be necessary? I just don't want to believe that this is a VGA problem, as my other games work just fine. Thoughts?

What are your settings at?
Also try watching your memory usage under task manager. If it hits 100%, then obviously the problem is there.

chrome eats memory like a pig that's your problem. GTA already takes as much ram as it can get up to about 8-9 gb

I'm playing on max settings, MSAA is on x4 and no high resolution shadows. With my R9 280x, I had no such problem at all, and my fps was around 34-42, and I recall Chrome always being active while I was playing GTA V, so I don't know why this problem just popped up out of the blue.

Again, how much memory does task manager say your PC is using? Because I have no idea if the message is referring to VRAM or normal RAM. The texture issue could be from either, though more likely normal RAM.

i switched from r9 380 to gtx 960 6gb OC and had lower fps in all my games, i installed the latest drivers for my new card...still no fps gains...deleted all my radeon card drivers crimson etc etc...FPS GAINS!
and make sure you download the right driver i think was the real key, i downloaded 2 for gtx 960 and when i type searched for my brand (gigabyte) it came up with a diff download

Before installing Nvidia's latest drivers, and before even putting the GTX 1060 into my PC, I made sure all of the AMD drivers were deleted (except the HDMI audio driver, as my friend advised me to keep that). I just checked the CPU usage, it was around 70-80% at times, and as for the memory, it was around 7GB, once even 8. I have one 8 GB stick (HyperX 1600 MHz) and one other 2GB stick 1333 MHz. When I turn Chrome off, the message doesn't appear, but the textures still load slowly. This happened just a couple of hours ago (all needless background processes were shut down):

Now I tried it, and the textures weren't loading as slowly as that time, in fact, it was much better, but I could still notice the cars and pedestrians loading slower than expected. I would think this was normal, but I don't recall ever encountering such issues on my R9 280x (maybe the shadows would sometimes take time to load when flying, but it was barely noticeable). Oh, and by the way, what settings are you playing at, and what's the average fps you get on your 960? I'm asking because my fps often drops to 39 suddenly, while driving, and I'm not sure if that's normal, cos I've seen a lot of videos featuring a rig which contained my CPU and GPU with the fps never dropping below 45 or sth

Your PC acknowledges that you have 10gb of RAM?
Because you're not only mixing size but speed, so there's a lot that could go wrong there.
@PECULIAR don't run 2 different types of RAM, your pc will run more efficient without the 2gb one. RAM runs in single channel or pairs (duo/quad etc) but to pair they have to be exactly the same.
if you don't want to buy another 8 GB stick (HyperX 1600 MHz) and run in duo i would reccomend changing your paging file size if you wan't any extra RAM.

Someone told me the same thing about my RAM, though I don't see why it would become a problem now, after nearly 6 years of running everything just fine (including GTA V)

But does your PC actually recognize it as 10gb?

Though the guaranteed side-effect is that the faster dimm will be slowed down to match the speed of the slower one.

(I DID NOT READ THE OTHER COMMENTS)

I would first suggest simply testing if your memory is indeed running out.
Run GTA5 with basically nothing else on.

Set GTA5 for "borderless fullscreen" and set it to your monitors resolution.
Alt tab out and open Task Manager, go to the performance tab and scale it down a bit so you can still see the mini graphs but it does not take up so much screen space.
Go in the options an make sure Task Manager is set for "always on top"

Now Alt Tab back into the game, you should still have the task manager visible while you are playing the game.
Play a bit and see what your system memory is doing.

If it really is maxing out your 10gb, go to the task manager and check in details what on earth is eating up all your ram.

Just tested it. Closed all of the "needless" processes, including Chrome, of course. The memory usage was around 5-6 GB (which is fairly normal), but the CPU usage was around 90-100% usage. The fps was also around 30-40, and the textures were still loading pretty slowly (not like before, where the entire city would just fail to load), but overall, some objects and houses would just take a lot of time to load. Tested Sleeping Dogs, NFS Most Wanted 2012, Storm 4, CS:GO, Devil May Cry, Prototype 2, and I found no such issues. Only in GTA V, and to make it worse, it used to run just fine before. I even installed some AMD cleanup utility to try and "uninstall" what's left of the remaining drivers, if there were any, but nothing changed. I mean, granted, my PC has gotten a lot slower these past few months and I believe I may have some kind of virus, so I'll try reinstalling the system first, and then I guess I'll buy an 8GB 1600 MHz RAM stick. Though, I still don't see why GTA V is the only game that's being affected this way, and why now. I also need to upgrade my CPU fan, as I've been using the stock fan for the past 3 years and the temperatures sometimes rise up to even 92 degrees, but AGAIN - I still don't see why it's only happening now that I've purchased the GTX 1060.

What clock speed is your CPU at?
@PECULIAR you can buy another 8gb RAM if you want to but you don't NEED to, i was just saying the 2gb extra is'nt beneficial to you.
i run GTA5 with a 4-core AMD CPU, 2x4gb RAM and GTX 960 OC no problems. your original problem needs to be adressed first forget about adding RAM, sounds like a memory leak or unneccessary programs running in the backgraound.

if this helps..
