What do the drop tanks do? How can I use them?

I havn't played the new update yet, but I assume they are jettison tanks (Extra fuel pods) drop them as ordanance like bombs and such.

At first I thought they are barrels that help landing on sea. So I tried it out - never saw a plain drowning that fast... Later I came back to the workshop and discovered a little description for them "for apearance purpose". That's it, sometimes reading description actually helps.

Btw it's a russian word, translates as a "hammer".
