My character disappears, the icons on the map disappear, can't open phone or see players / money / rank and then game disconnects me from server saying that there has been an error with the session, followed by "return to grand theft auto v". it has been doing that for 2 days now. how do I fix it?

same thing happens to me every time I start. Go back to story mode, try again hangs in the clouds....Restart, loads up, open phone try to join mission, character disappears, back to story mode, eventually after 15 or so minutes it starts to work. Once it starts working ok then its fine until the next time I start up then I have to go through similar cycles. Its only been doing this for like a week.
This games multiplayer networking system is pathetic. Ridiculous load times, constant connection losses, why???

Yep, I am having trouble aswell. Sometimes it happens after playing for a bit. I also get the "An update is needed" message alot. I have no clue why it happens, but I'm scared of losing product when selling hehe

It's been happening to me with a fair amount of frequency lately. On your end the best you can do is make sure that your network and firewall/walls are properly configured to ensure no network blocking on your end. Make sure your firewalls are configured to allow GTAV's connections. You can probably set your PC as the "DMZ" in the router config, or make sure the needed ports are forwarded or triggered as necessary too.

@Buck you think the problem is with connectivity? At least I'll try your tips! But I thought I allready had setup my DMZ/routing. But it's worth a test.

Something is wrong now... infinite load screen, cant get in game. Restarted and same thing. Must be a heavy traffic, friday. But 15 mins without getting first to load online , wow

I have no idea, but it's something you can eliminate on your end.

If a static host is already configured as the DMZ then port blocking should NOT be an issue unless there's a firewall elsewhere that might be blocking connections. DMZ SHOULD work with a preferred DHCP table assigned IP, but most devices specific that static is required.

Using DMZ while playing Online, beautiful tip... Nothing like leaving your PC wide open to dozens of addresses in a buggy game with thousands of exploits.

This is an issue with R* due to heavy traffic, it's nothing new! Unless you guys wanna explain how the game was working correctly for this users until recently.

There was also a patch recently that may explain some of the problems! Over here is working correctly, but I got the patch fine when it was launched around 2/3 days ago.

So now we wait.. I only forwarded ports. Dmz disabled. Should be fine for now. At least my issues are still the same xD

It's nowhere near as risky as you want to think, esp if you are using firewall software, like you know, what's included in literally every router and copy of Windows. All it does is allow the ports to route, that doesn't necessarily mean anything is listening or will do anything with an incoming connection.
