Yes. Opening the chute to straighten out is a good way of losing a second (at least). If you are close to the ground and have someone behind you there's a good chance they will smash into you because of the sudden break.
The game is balanced with air control in mind. If you can't change the bind it breaks the game. If there's no way of changing it also gives an advantage to controller players for no good reason because controllers (I've been told) use the duck button for it instead.
