Offworld Trading Company to me is a spiritual successor to Mule. I remember the first time I saw the concept art and was reading about the game. I asked right away if this was a modern day MULE and Soren replied
Heck, if I would have, I would have bought it instantly, but I'm still undecided...
But then again, aren't we forgetting the entire Anno series?
I absolutely love it.
now I have a little bit that "original" MULE (VC64) feeling ...
But that BATTLES for the claims was a lot more fun in the original MULE !
Haven't played Planet MULE
so Offworld Trading company has to improve for me a lot in the points
CLAIMS (only strategy is atm get the one with value 4)
EXPLORING (too fast , no thrill)
WINNING THE GAME (Buyout is a joke)
wait ... too much too change, as I would prefer an epic game lasting 20 hours per map and not 30 minutes ...
Anno is a city builder though. Damn fine one if I do say so myself. Anno 1404 is what I would consider the best city builder of all time for single and or multiplayer. My version was known as Dawn of Discovery however due to NA release having a seperate name. Dawn of Discovery Gold is an amazing game. Offworld Trading Company is not a city builder though. Who could ever forget Anno?
Hell if it wasn't for Ubisoft DRM I would own it on multiple platforms. Ironically I lost my Dawn of Discovery Gold when Impulse became EBGAMES. In fact I lost all my games on Stardock because of that. :(
Try Planet Mule it's free and it really is the best remake I've seen. It's been going for some time now and still being supported. It has online play also so you might fall in love with it all over again. I only wish they could get the rights from EA to do a proper release in HD or something.
in 1983 I and my friends expected not so much from a game as 4 colours in a game was already WOOOH :-)
I would say the fun with MULE was sitting with friends around in the same room with 2 joysticks and 2 on the keyboard and shouting to each other, when someone just "clicked" at the right time to claim the ground with 4 crystals :-)
Not possible to bring that back ... so now we would need a complex epic game ... and civ V was a little bit that, but still not what is possible (most of the time we waited for the AI and no MOD support for MP, worse MP engine and so on ..)
hoped BE would have been an upgraded version of civ V but was a setback and this is something real different, but far away from an epic game !
So I will have to wait again for a real build up game !
There's nothing slow or boring about M.U.L.E. It's about as frantic as a fighting game... and sometimes there's even actual fighting...
"SELL ME SOME FOOD YOU BASTARD OR I WON'T HAVE TIME TO PLANT ANYTHING IN MY NEXT TURN!!"
:)
I wish OTC will have more elements from this game.
Why not? 4X = eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.
This game has all of these.
Why because the Wiki says it's TBS? It's more an RTS then it is a TBS. Sure all the players take their turns (which are realtime) but all of the action takes place in real time even the bartering and land grabs. If you wanted to get technical it would be a hybrid of sorts but really the bulk of the game is played realtime not in a turn based fashion. During bartering all players are in realtime. During landgrabs all players are playing in realtime. During their turns all players are playing in real time. The only real turns in the game is at the end of each month.
Offworld is not a 4x game either not even close.
i would say OTC is a 4x game all the way.
eXplore = you scan the planet for minerals and lift the fog of war
eXpand = you upgrade your HQ, get more claims to expand your company
eXploit = you build mines to get resources
eXterminate = you blow up other buildings, steal stuff and exterminate other companys by buying them up
