Is this game worth it just for the single player?
I mostly play single player. Lately playing Factorio, Seven Kingdoms 2, Kerbal, RR tycoon, Gal Civ 2, Patrician and that kind of thing. I like trading games and resource management. So far i tried some of the tutorial and it looks like its going to take awhile for me to get the hang of it. Is it worth the trouble because the tutorial seems kind of dense?

It is quite a deep game to get into and it can be frustrating sometimes, but there are enough difficulties and options you can tweak to make it easier for you in the beginning. Like turning the sabotages off, slowing the gamspeed down and understanding how the game works first is a good start. And even if you tweaked all these the difficulty also depends on the generated map or planet you're on, what resource deposits are available, who are the competitors and how good your founding location was, because these determine the prices of stuff. But there are tons of guides and the community on discord is pretty helpful if you have questions. Depends on you really, you said you like trading and resource management and this game is all about using these and more to edge out the competition. There are a lot of variables to think of and to use to gain that edge.
But if you like the core game, yeah I'd say the game is worth it just for sp.

I would totally recommend it if you enjoyed patrician. The trading aspect is very similar just much more condensed into short games, campaign allows you to build up as it were, if you want something which remembers where you are.

Really enjoyed single player, if you get reasonably decent they sometimes do newbie tournaments which is a cool introduction into multiplayer.

Definitely yes. I think competitive players do not play the single-player "Campaign" mode, but skirmish against AI, the daily challenge and Infinite Map Challenge provide tons of content if you enjoy the core gameplay mechanics.

Just finished campaign and very much enjoyed it. Progress is saved between each mission, so you have additional means to improve your competitive advantage. For example I bought perk which give me free solar panel on mission start + perk "liquid battery" (solar panel work at night), so I always started each following mission with free power :)

If you like Patrician, in about a year or so we should a new Port Royale FOUR, coming out from Kalypso. I have high hopes for that game. Although I would have preferred that they do a new version of Patrician 4 first. In the meantime, take a look at Railway Empire, it first came out in open Beta 2 years ago, with the release version in early 2018. They are still working on expanding and developing the game, and adding new DLCs for new areas of the World.

I love the Patrician/Port Royale/Rise of Venice sequence, and I am waiting to see better play out of the AI controlled positions, i.e. Merchants that I competing against.

We have similar tastes, friend. It's totally worth it.
I almost never play multiplayer. How many and which DLC's should I get if any are necessary. When I see a list like they have for offworld, I think, sheesh, they want me to spend $200 and I don't even know if I like it.
I've had about equal amounts of fun in single player and multiplayer with this game.
