Are these roads real?
Are these actual roads in the US? Could we use a US map book to check out routes and info?

Yes, these are actual roads. However, not every road is in the game.

There are based off real roads, but not every road of that state is in the game.

there real at a scale of 1:20

Yeah the map is truncated considerably, so it's not a 1:1 representation. It only includes some of the bigger towns/cities and routes. But it does include some points of interest and scenery that you would see if visiting these places, and it gives quite a true-to-life atmosphere and air which mirrors the real US states.

Same with the European version of the game - it does feel like you are driving around the countries of the EU with their unique cultures and history, and you can recognise some landmarks as you go.

Some people have mapped out what is represented. Obviously at a reduced scale, but some sections are 1:1.

I'm sure the whole map is based off of Google maps, which isn't 100% accurate, but close. One of the roads in my hometown for example is a two way street in the game, but is only one way in actuality.

It cannot be 100% accurate for a fact that it has been scaled down to a 1:20 representation, so a lot of things will be missing, naturally. But as mentioned by others, they are indeed (based upon) real roads, so far the only fictional roads would have been the older parts (non-reworked) areas of California and Nevada, while the rest are all based on real-life counterparts.

Edit: I should also mention that SCS map expansion's current focus is currently based on Route 66, one of the reasons why they have decided to head for the Great Lakes, to fill in the Route 66 corridor.

Could I ask what you mean by this, perchance? As is my understanding, they're just filling in states from the west to the east, south to the north, in order. They aren't prioritising the R66 states over others. They've done the northern states like WA and MT, 66 goes nowhere near them.

Previously SCS has had a map expansion policy of rushing for Florida. But as of Christmas 2022 Stream, they have changed course, for the Great Lakes now, so theoretically back then Kansas was not the followup state after Oklahoma, it would've been Louisiana and/or Arkansas. But some people have complained about the map shape and thus the change in course, which is also according to popular support for a continued staircasing pattern.

Hmm...I admit I haven't watched any of the livestreams so I may be somewhat uninformed. But aren't they just doing vertical columns of the states right now, rather than following R66? So the next states after Oklahoma and Kansas should be Nebraska and then South and North Dakota, which aren't near 66? And then they'll start at the bottom again with Louisiana, also not on the highway. If they were following 66, why did they do the north western states?

Okay lets make this easy and simple.

Previously they have aimed at reaching Florida ASAP, this means no more staircasing, or North South as you called it.

Now, Pavel has changed his mind, he aims to reach the Great Lakes first, under the guise of having a completed Route 66. I have misworded the initial comment.

I did not mean to say that they will only do states related to Route 66, that is obviously silly but I didn't expect that is what you read it as. Instead, its that they will aim to reach the Great Lakes so that we can enjoy a complete drive on the Route 66.

Now the big brain moment is to not think that they will only do States related to Route 66, but rather see that they didn't say "only Route 66-related states", and look at the bigger picture of a Rush-to-Florida vs Reach-the-Greatlakes.

Also, this heading would've only taken effect after Texas, or Oklahoma rather since regardless of where you go after Texas DLC, Oklahoma really makes the map look ugly without it. So no, Montana DLC did not count towards this, and I've no idea where Washington came from.

Okay, thank you for the explanation. And I apologise if I upset you with my misunderstanding, it just came across like you were saying something else.
