A.I. traffic is dumb
Why is the A.I. in this game so bad? For example, A.I. cars merging onto the freeway will happily ram right into the side of my tractor instead of waiting for a gap in traffic. I'm then somehow responsible and paying the obligatory $900 fine for causing a wreck,,, that I clearly did not cause.

Known issues.

You are fined for being involved in an accident. Yes it is that simple as the game does not determine fault.

I hardly drive in the right lane because of this. Here is hoping that one day SCS will fix this.

The AI is pretty good, but something happened over the last months, where maybe there was an AI update or something has them just stopping on a freeway for no reason. Don't know why.

The AI has limited perception in this game, and for same maneuvers, may not see you (especially if you are alongside like that). You may have the right of way, but is it really worth causing an accident over? The AI is also known to come to a dead stop at the end of an on ramp to wait for a gap in traffic, which is hardly preferable if you’re behind them on said on ramp.

It’s frustrating, everyone knows about it, the only real thing to do is drive defensively (you are driving an 80,000lb rig that will flatten any car that crosses you) until you get used to the game and can identify the AI’s idiosyncrasies and can act accordingly to remove yourself from potential conflicts.

I get what you are saying, and throughout my 250 hrs of playtime this really doesn't happen super often (maybe a dozen or two times.) I almost exclusively haul heavy though, so it's right lane gang for me, and difficult to slow my 130,000lb+ rig down fast enough to avoid it. Often times there is traffic to my left anyways leaving me the choice of get hit, or cause the hit.

I've always wondered if AI is just as bad in vanilla, or maybe some mods are tinkering with them somehow

I always wonder when I see one of these threads if anyone drives in the real world, cause it sounds like they really have no clue what real world conditions are like and yes the A.I. in both games could use an overhaul, but drive where I drive and you'll appreciate not being behind a real wheel dealing with these so called people who somehow got a drivers license.:steamfacepalm:

In this game, doesnt matter what you're hauling, left lane is free for anyone :-)

Yeah, I seem to remember a time when the AI hitting you only caused damage and no fine. Also AI stopping in the literal middle of an intersection because the light turned yellow seems new-ish? Not sure though

You're right. I just see it that way, in that people are brainless when they drive. Same here.

I think you misunderstood the post my man. My concern was not how realistic it is that the AI rams the side of my truck and other general traffic shenanigans, but rather why the game is fining me for the wreck that is the game's fault

Sometimes you don't get a fine when you're involved in a collision regardless of who was at fault. I suspect the game tries to even things out a bit by letting you off without a penalty every 5th or 6th time.

The other night I had an AI driver straight up die right in front of me.

Driving through a town. An AI truck which I was following, going somewhat slower than the speed limit but there was a junction ahead so I couldn't pass. No other cars in sight, in front or behind. Suddenly they started repeatedly feathering the brake, on-off, on-off, on-off, losing about 5 mph a time, until they come to a complete stop in the middle of the road about 100 feet away from the junction.

And they just sat there, permanently, refusing to move despite nothing being in front of them and a huge traffic jam piling up behind. I eventually pulled out and went around them, drove through the junction and explored some industries and a garage further down the road to turn them yellow. And after several minutes as I was coming back along the road to explore the rest of the city, they were still there, unmoving. Remained there until I left render distance and they vanished.

Are you driving like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TxQiipVVew
If you're not, you're doing it wrong.

Drivers are predictable and accidents are avoidable. Jump to 15:40 and you'll see. Knowing that AI is dumb and not using it in your favor is also dumb.
