Looks like the potatoes still require watering for this layout? If the Onions are contributing to the weed prevention, and the carrots are optional.. wouldn't substituting the carrots for Tomatoes help keep the potatoes retaining water too?
I tried the 5 apple tree configuration, but for whatever reason I would always end up mucking up the order/placement of the potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and onions.. so I found my own configuration that I like. It's one less apple tree, but it has a higher harvest boost and a higher profit yield.. (and an extra crop for maximized variety)
