Yes, this is a prequel to DQ 1+2, and they decided to release it first. It's more of a complete and whole game than DQ 1+2, and Yuji Horii decided it was smart to do this one first.
It's the most popular game in the series in Japan.

Dragon Quest 3 is a prequel and takes place before the events of Dragon Quest 1. That's why they changed the order for the release of the remakes.

They've also said or rather suggested/hinted there will be bonuses in 1-2 for having completed save data of 3 as they designed the Remakes around playing 3 first and stated there will be surprises for playing it in this order.

Yeah they are kinda doing it weird. 3 is a prequel. I hate when companies do numbered releases like that, just confuses new players.

So... it's being called a prequel. As someone that played back when it was "dragon warrior", I'll give this a try then since it's supposedly first in the series even though it's the third release... makes sense I guess.

I think you mean it's being released according to the storyline or something since chronologically (I.E. in order by time) DQ1 was released almost 20 years before DQ3.

Yeah, the timeline of the story is apparently with this one first... which is weird if it's a prequel it should have been done at least second or third instead of first.
