Any reason to be a Mage or Priest late game?
Since the Sage basically learns everything the other mages can, do they truly over power the Mage and Priest completely?
I ask cause specific jobs have unique attributes in their stats, and I wonder if say the Mage has something that the Sage doesn't excel in.

I find uses for them. Relying on a sage for all spells is meh. St some point game gets hard. I found mage useful for my end martail artist. He has critical attack 64 mp. Hut luttle mp. Mage boost it.

Also warrior mage was fun. Cleric thief. Stole everything and removed ailments from party when needed.

In the end your toons will have as ll abilities.

No they dont excel at their peculiar stat more than a sage....
Mage is about magic, mp pool and some speed/luck too /priest is average on everything almost equally....
Sage is about magic, MP pool AND is average or even good on the rest (and of course learn both spell type....) so its an easy choice here : better have a sage or a mixed physical character for your "final class" than just a priest or a mage in my opinion....

The sage can wear better equipment. I don't think the cleric can equip swords for example.

The mage's main advantages are better agility, luck, and MP. The sage's main advantages are better strength and arguably equipment options. If you're talking about a stage where you've already learned both set of spells and are looking to settle on a final class, the mage has an argument. If you're still trying to learn spells, the Sage is sort of the obvious choice because it's a lot faster to get both sets of spells at once and having both sets is a big advantage.

The priest is kind of just boned in comparison to a Sage. They do offer better luck but I don't think that's enough.

Also, keep in mind that switching directly to Sage requires you use a Words of Wisdom, of which there are only three in the game. Otherwise you have to go through Gadabout first, which has terrible stats. If you're doing post-game grinding and want to make a Sage with stats that are as good as possible, you'll probably want to transition directly from Mage or Priest to Sage; if you also want to make a Sage early in the game to pick up spells as fast as possible, you'll want to plan out who you're going to use your Words of Wisdom on.

If I'm not mistaken mages can equip poison needles (to kill metal slimes) where sages can't.
But sages can learn puff so you have a guaranteed turn 2 kill if they haven't fled yet, so...

Sages have the worst luck stat out of all classes which makes them more vulnerable to status debuffs in the post-game dungeon. Mages get much better luck growth but worse physical stats by comparison. Also fewer spells, obviously. Priest luck is somewhere in the middle.

Making a sage is still always a good idea, but just be mindful of saving those luck seeds. Otherwise your primary caster could be stuck sleeping through the hardest part of the game.

Going by the Japanese "HyperWiki" for this game https://hyperwiki.jp/dq3rhd2d/

The main thing I think should be added to the above about Sages is that they have the lowest HP gain among casters at late game (around 40). With post-game levels this is further hampered by their slower level up rate. Also, when it comes to Strength, Sages switch places with Priests in Strength sometime after Level 40 (this is partly due to their slower leveling, partly because Priests have stronger Strength gains in the 40s and 50s than Sages do), with Sages not catching back up in Strength until around Priest 90.

Priests are the slowest casters. Theoretically this may be useful if you put them on AI to act as the slow healer with FullHeal and Kazing. But from my experience in the prior remake most postgame healing wants to use Multiheal.

Okay this is kind of stupid reasoning but having one offensive caster and one defensive caster may make it easier to tailor their auto battle AI to specific scenarios. Who wants to think? I just turn battle on ultra fast and press fight every few seconds.

Actually... it was kind of annoying that you couldn't put your sage on fight wisely after learning priest spells because they would open every battle with Magic Barrier instead of just killing things. The offensive strategy works still but it seems like the AI is dumber at efficiently killing things on that setting
