Game Doesn't Start - Related to OpenAL?
So I noticed when I first installed the game, that it seemed have installed OpenAL. I already had it installed, so I guess it just installed a new one.

Now, I began the download for the game at (for example) 20:10. I noticed the OpenAL installer was modified in the programs files x86 folder at 20:22, and the game finished downloading at 20:52.

In the installscript_vdf of the openal installer in the RWR folder, it had instructions to run the installer. Did the installer run before I actually ran the game? it seems like steam, as it was downloading the game, ran the installer.

However, when I installed the game the second time to check this, no installer rans. I tried running configure to no avail.

If I run the game first, then run the OpenAL installer from the games files, should it run? that seems like the solution, but just want to make sure.

Is there a reason that RWR wont launch the Steamservice.exe excutable to install the OpenAL and vc_redist/directx?

Steam is supposed to do it automatically, I've set up OpenAL as one of the common redistributables to install. We have informed Steam that it doesn't seem to work for all players with RWR. Their response was basically that it should work except if a player uninstalls OpenAL manually.

We've had around 10-20(?) reports of the very same issue and much more people probably found the solution in FAQ, so while clearly affecting only a marginal amount of installs people have done it's still surprisingly wide spread, surely all can't just have uninstalled OpenAL themselves.

When I get around looking into it, I'll try to make Steam install OpenAL "manually" as clearly the automatic way doesn't seem to work as well as expected.

Did you find the workaround yet btw? Just run that OpenAL installer, or use http://modulaatio.com/runningwithrifles/oalinst.exe

Yes, running the oalinst from the game files work, however the version in your installer is outdated.

Instead, I looked into some of my windows shadow copy files, and ran a 2.1.0.0 verison of oalinst. The version RWR comes with is 2.0.7.0 I believe.

Yup, Steam only provides OpenAL version 2.0.7.0 as a common redistributable, so that's the one RWR comes with. The same is behind the link I mentioned.
