According to PCGamingWiki, only the Mac App Store release of this version was updated for modern Mac systems.
On Steam, only Complete Edition received the update.

It's not gonna change. No dev has looked at his since 2005. Early adoption is not great M1 not gonna play 90% of the games out there except with emulation.
