Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2

Game is way too punishing for melee builds
Everytime I have a problem with the game is when a boss or an enemy turns on an ability that nukes close proximity aoe. Like the act 2 final boss, when he turns on those explosions I can't get close to him and do any dps.
Granted you can pick ranged abilities, but I'm playing a tempest flury/bell monk and most of my dps comes from very close range combat.
I've seen this trend with some other bosses and enemies too, it's as if the game is built to punish melee, since it is much much easier to kite enemies and hit them from a range.

With that said, any tips on how to build a tanky monk so I can stay basically inside the dude in that last phase to dish out damage?

I don't have any idea how monk works, but if it helps, do you have resist with you? I forgot if act 2 final boss just needed lightning resist or something, but I was literally just face-tanking the entire fight with a full melee warrior. Granted though I had high-enough armor by that time as well.

I think he does fire + lightning damage. I got 30% for both. I'm not sure how I'm going to increase it though.

I had about 75% resistance on lightning when I tried it, and somewhere around 40'ish fire resist iirc. I had about 8k armor with about on Cruel difficulty as well.

I always try to keep a bunch of elemental rings and armor parts with elem resists, in case I need a specific boost to a certain element. Normally I run with 40%ish overall elem resist, save for Chaos.

If you have some on your storage, it might be worth testing it out. Every time I lower my resist, I always get a massive damage taken increase from that property.

Hate to be the guy that says it, but as someone that has levelled Warrior up without any issues blasting large AoE packs & nuking most bosses in 1-2 attempts - It's probably just a skill issue, the game isn't meant to be a cakewalk.

Upgrade your gear armor and weapons, make sure your build/spells combine and work well together, support gems etc.

But at the end of the day, make sure you learn the Boss attack patterns, roll or block when you need to, and fit in the attacks in the small windows of opportunity. This isn't Diablo where you just smash your face against the boss and it dies, you need to play smart or die. Just keep practicing and improve.

Resistances are key to survive and dish out damage. 50% is fine for each, try collecting resistance gear asap

Or maybe you haven't figured out how to make a melee build work yet? Just because it's very difficult doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with the balancing or game design. In other words, git gud. (Maybe.)

Jamanra is probably the most difficult boss in the game for melee, he has the most damaging effects going on at once that makes it difficult to get close.

As other said, resistances can mitigate the chip damage you take. Maybe get a potion that generates charges per second.

I did warrior, but I know monk has some semi-ranged abilities that allow you to dish out damage without having to stand on top of him. Doing some swaps for the fight may be needed.

Any tips for warrior? I’m maybe 5 hours from him.

For bosses I build up endurance charges with magma barrier, use infernal warcry, and perfect strike.

Hopefully I can use this strat.

pick up resist gear from vendor or drops, and try to craft on top of that for something usable.
resist should be your prio, damage comes from tree for the early stages of the game.
use charm on belt with resist type that you lack

You can feel the difference between having Res and lacking Res by the ammount of damage you take. Get another defence layer like armor or block.

Dont look just for damage and skil combos.

Charm res only activates when you get slapped

Yes but if you lack on res, this is a good way to activate that res.
better then nothing. ones you get hit by a element type, you get a res boost on that
