This game (Free to play) is powered through micropayments like the ones I mentioned before.
Still has nothing to do with this game being perfect for offline play. I want to play on steam deck while I'm out and about.
Almost everything happening in the game is server-side, or validated server-side. Instances are generated server-side, drops, enemies and their positions, life bars, damage.. That prevents cheating and/or modding, but that also means the whole game depends on this server infrastructure. Offline play is extremely unlikely, ever.
Additionally Local files are a security nightmare, and for an offline version to work EVERYTHING would need to be stored locally. Character files, monster files, account files that track how much premium currency you have. These are all things that could be edited if the files for them were stored locally.
Wanna give yourself infinite HP and damage? You could do it.
Wanna give yourself infinite PoE bux and buy out the entire MTX shop? You could do it.
So yeah, no. As long as PoE2 is a live service game supported by a cash shop an offline version is not going to happen.
Even if the cash shop wasn't a thing you can't just 'unplug' an online game from it's server and have it work. There are parts of the game that run off the server, rather than directly on the client so unless all those parts were reworked to run locally the game wouldn't work anymore. To be clear, only GGG knows how much of the game requires a server connection.
Personally I think the only way "PoE2 offline version" happens is as some kind of "End of Service" legacy conversion after the current version goes offline. And and considering how PoE1 is still actively being developed that may not happen for a VERY long time if at all.
I bet there is a way to verify the cash shop while still allowing for offline. Who cares if someone modifies their own files on an offline or single player game. Most people playing diablo or poe are playing solo or with friends. The anti owning anything brigade is insane.
You already have an offline mode bro. If you play alone you are basically off line except when in town. Don't believe me? Press escape when on a map alone and see what happens.
