2:13:40 - Click to move vs. WASD

Mark:
"almost every developer and designer, they all back to click to move...yep, it has gone full tilt the other way."

So basically WASD is allready canceled internally.

IMO rightfully so, i played several WASD top down games and the only one which nailed it was Smashmuck Champions.

Now, Smashmuck Champions was a PvP arena brawler..
not a "i grind this 12 hours a day"-game like Path of Exile.

Imo WASD is incredibly unprecise compared to mouse and it adds way to many unnecesarry key strokes to a game where u need to grind hours on end.

They allready removed flasks because it was to much keys and to avoid piano gameplay, but they just replaced it with even more keys.

dodge roll+flasks+spells+wasd
=
15+ keys to press plus manually aim with ur mouse
now imagine doing that 12+ hours a day
it will become tedious.

I will definetly give WASD a try but i allready see myself playing mainly with controller and switch to MnK when doing inventory, menus etc.

or even take the bullet, not beeing able to move and autoattack
and do it like the DEVs and play click to move entirely

thoughts?

No thoughts, mind boggled.

Only thing that comes to mind is playing wow retail, I think I had like 23 buttons, in addition to WASD. Did not even break a sweat... not that it would be a fantastic comparison, but it is pretty much a 24/7 game. You just get used to it, is my guess.

I'll use gamepad. It worked decent for poe1, hopefully they improved it further for poe2.

WASD is superior to click to move in every way.

WASD + Ranger (bow/gun) = An American's dream!

i will use a controller so this doesn't matter to me

had the chance to try the game at gamescom and the controller felt so good that i will be using one despite almost always playing games with keyboard and mouse.

Hopefully people realise it's another option...

i read that quite a lot "WASD is allways better" etc.

but then again what games are you actually referencing to?

Diablo 4 added WASD a few month ago and almost noone plays it.

The only successfull top down WASD game in the past years i can remember was V:Rising
... and i hated that for its controlls.

So when you say "WASD is allways better" what games are you actually talking about?

What a way to ragebait by misrepresenting/exaggerating what have been said and shown.

I don't quite get how you find that number ? 15+ keys ? I doubt you'll use that many skills, or even use flasks that much, and not all at the same time. It doesn't really matter if there are more keys to use overall as long as you don't have to use them at the same time all the time.

The reality is that, each can play the way they feel more comfortable with.
They're clearly proud of what they've done with WASD and I have no doubt it'll feel fine for people who like that. Knowing that some people still play click to move and that it plays good as well is a really good thing, it means that even if they focussed on making WASD feel good, they didn't make Click to move irrelevant in the process.

I also heard good things about controller support, so yeah, you may not like WASD yourself, but a lot of people will, and that's good news.

"way to many unnecesarry key strokes"

Compared to having to swing the mouse back and forth constantly to move in one direction and keep attacking in the other, I'll take WASD any day. Been wanting it for PoE1 for ages. WASD also frees mouse 1 for attacks etc.

We'll see, but I'll be very surprised if I return to mouse movement - I loved WASD in games like Battlerite as well.

Someone mentioned that it might just be PR talk too, since when they're asked about WASD they praise it as the optimal thing, and when they're asked about mouse controls it's also "oh yeah it's the best way, everyone's using it!" too.

They said wasd is very useful when you play ranged classes.

I think I'd really like to use the WASD keys, since they're so ingrained in my muscle memory. That way, I can focus on other things and not have to worry about navigation. If I'm still having trouble with managing my spells, I might try binding some actions to the mouse scroll wheel (up, down) instead
