how do you remove it?
Good luck getting them to change anything.
You don't expect to get a regal orb back when you're done with it. Same deal.
Making runes not removable creates an incentive to never use the system, putting a rune in your item DEVALUES it since people will try to buy items with empty rune slots
just let players destroy the existing rune and replace it with a new one.
This means you don't really need to worry about removing runes etc, other than if you put em in a really nice weapon etc and could use a better rune in it later, but in general you can just make another weapon when/if you want with better runes.
Pretty sure they will change this eventually cause right now if you wanna spend the time and you are further in the game where gold is much more common, it makes getting those currencies cake.
it encourages hoarding and less experimenting
No, its a piss poor thing because we don't have enough loot or crafting mats, or deterministic way to craft replacement items to make up lack of resists if some of your gear changes.
Runes are not big and meaningful enough to make me think really hard and strategise about what I need to use. I have about 300 runes. I just look at my lowest resist and go "thats the one". It's stupid game design to try and force that "deep meaningful decision" weight on something that in every other game would be a simple switch out or write-over action to fill the socket with a replacement rune.
All they need to do is allow the socket currency to blank out a populated socket, which increases the value of that currency, and makes better use of the hundreds of cheap disposable runes that drop. Soul Cores are different due to their utility, but the resist style runes need a new mechanic.
The ridiculously high drop rate of Runes, low value, and single use indicates these things are completely disposable, they form no part of the overall economy, there is no real decision making behind them, and the limitation of the system is pretty insulting. Making them really rare would make me think twice before using one maybe, but my armour pieces are often lasting me 20 levels or more because nothing I craft and nothing that drops is actually an upgrade for me.
If we were regularly replacing our gear I would have less of an issue with the current design, but this is simply not the case right now. Everyone I've spoken to thinks we need a way to re-use the sockets.
