You're not losing out on much depending on how you prefer playing the game. Online has as said leaderboards where you can compete for exclusive cosmetics. Offers trading with players and marketplace enconomy. The social aspect of playing with friends or finding strangers to farm and gear with etc. But the whole game is very much doable solo and many people prefer this in some aspects. There is also the new odyssey gamemode which is like ssf (solo-self found) that you can play if you prefer only playing solo but still online.
