There is no other way to unlock those characters.
Because the game has been totally revamped recently, it's the only way to find out if you like it.
Besides, there is more than enough content to tide you over until the Winter Sale.
It offers plenty of characters for 1.55$.
Than if you like it visit wiki and check which characters are interesting to you.
This hasn't really happened much at all before, so everyone freaked out and started screaming about how they lost this and that, due to thinking the developer had simply messed up and refused to fix whatever "bug" caused this wipe. It was a necessary precaution they had to take to implement the revamp, as it changed a whooole bunch. Don't expect another one requiring such a thing any time remotely soon, or really at all.
The game's fine, and so is the base game - if you like the idea of a Diablo-Lite with charming pixel-art and various different builds and characters, it's worth the whole bundle to have access to as many options as possible. Got my seal of approval, just watch out for one-shots every now and then when you're picking up the pace.
Besides all that, the other negative reviews are about the revamp, 3.0. People don't like change. It's very subjective - I suggest finding out for yourself over asking questions, as people who are angry are more likely to bother visiting these forums than the ones having fun playing the game.
Oh, and if the voice acting's not your cup of tea, there's an option to turn it off.
You can try it out for under 2 hours and refund it if it's really not your kind of thing overall.
Oh, man, it's been a whiiile since I played Dungeon Souls, but I do remember my time with it. I find Dungeon Souls to be the far simpler of the two, with a lot less carrying over between "runs" than Hero Siege. Of course, take into account that they're not the same type of game, exactly, they just share the omni-directional attacks and twin-stick-esque gameplay.
If I had to compare the two as to which one's more fun? I'd pick Hero Siege, as it held my attention significantly longer than Dungeon Souls ever did. However, I don't mean that as a way to say that Dungeon Souls is a terrible game, just that I enjoyed my time with Hero Siege more.
I think Hero Siege is a lot meatier on content and builds you can do with the playable characters, but, in the end, it'll all come down to if you even like how it handles those characters in the first place. If you're more into Diablo-Lite, where it plays more like Diablo, obviously, than you are into a roguelike, where it's all about permadeath runs (which Hero Siege admittedly does have an option for), I definitely suggest Hero Siege over Dungeon Souls.
Your mileage may vary, blah blah, you know how that whole song and dance goes, I'm sure.
If you're still on the fence - grab the base game, play for under 2 hours, and buy the complete bundle if you end up liking the base. Obviously, refund if you don't. If you like the base, the complete bundle's worth every penny on a big 75% sale.
