Dumb Talents Question

I've been looking an dhavn' been able to find a decent begginers guide yet, so mumbling my way through.

On the talent select screen what are those smaller unmarked checkboxes for?
They have the Talent boxes with lil picture description and stats, but I notece some smaller boxes, sometimes they appear on a line between skills, sometimes they are just sitting there unconnected to anything, Hover over provides zero explination and at low level at least you can't click them to see whats happening.
So wat are they?

Those small squares are just meant to move you around the talent tree.
