you musst lvl your weapon to unlock more slots, every slot has a little number saying what lvl the slot need to get unlocked

low weapons only have short slot passes that end quickly
if you choose one slot path the other paths closes until you remove the crystal and choose the other pass

You can always put in a crystal, as long as:
(1) You have unlocked the slot (make sure it's not grayed out with a number on it)
(2) You have acquired crystals to put in the slots
(3) You have the correct *color* of crystal for the colored slot (i.e. light blue crystal for a light blue slot)

Do you maybe only have 3 crystals? (You can check in your inventory)

If you are early in the game, you might not have many crystals yet

i have tons of crystals, trust me it just cuts off the other paths, thought they stayed open

It's a low budget indie game, so the devs were limited on what they could include. It's pretty impressive to me that they included customization at all.

When you get to the endgame weapons, you get 9 crystal slots.

Also, you can keep upgrading by using the crystal crafting system. You can +5 your crystals by merging them to get new ones.

Hope that helps

huh guess a tatoural will tell me at some point or dose is it something you have to figure out on your open, never seen a opion for it yet

There are tables to merge gems starting at the first city. No tutorial.
