Making a game similar enough that scenarios can be easily imported from the original just means the game will be artificially constrained to accommodate compatibility of an outdated 8 year old game.
The original game had many flaws (look at pathing for example).. allowing compatibility means they need to find a way to work around these flaws instead of just designing a fresh new system. Doing so would constrain the dev team into an outdated box.
Id much prefer an innovative next gen game that doesnt need to worry about such constraints.
Its not like the scenarios from the original are going to magically disappear when the sequel is released.
