From The Depths

Cannons that can shoot targets under water...
So, submarines are kind of useless in this game. Since heavy cannons etc. can shoot accuratly deep under water there is no benefit to going under sea. Makes me sad. The AI just starts lobbing cannon shells at you underwater with pinpoint accuracy. High velocity weapons are pointless underwater in reality as the water is too dense and the munitions tear themselves apart. Thus depth charges and torpedoes rely on really big explosions rather than going fast.

Also, it is hilarious seeing a ship with no bottom still fighting because it is made of wood. I used torpedoes to completely remove 2/3rds of the hollow bottom of the ship and it was still raining cannon shells on me from the surface!

They are not entirely useless, if you can go to a decent depth. The shots are not as powerful underwater, and if you add some shields on the top of your sub, most of them can be reflected.

I recommend using fragmentation Warheads on Torpedos. Try using the offset slider to let them Explode 45° upwards or something like that and keep the spread to a lower °.

Heh. When going underwater you ~only~ have to worry about cannons... lasers and missiles do next to nothing to you (even torpedo's only reach the depth they are designed for). Oh.... and rocks. SubAI likes to kiss the reef. ^^

So no AI subs in shallow water. Good to know! I would think that depth charges and mines would be dangerous though. Or do underwater blasts not do the damage they should?

The blasts work just fine, but any old sub can get to 50m depth and mines have trouble reaching deeper than 10m. Depth charges could work, but I'm not sure any of the built-in ships even have any in the first place.

while its possible to build subs atm, they are not fully implemented. they are currently in a quasi implemented state much like land and space carft. Do keep that in mind as is only alpha.

I admit they are tricky to pilot (not using one of those fixed depth types, I just tweaked it to be nearly neutrally boyant and use props to control the orientation and depth) but they seem to work just fine. Well aside from cannons targeting them underwater.
