This Loot can take the form of a great number of things, most of which come firmly under the heading of "WANT!!" and included in that number are "Weapon attachments" which this tech lets you add to your troops weapons.
If you go into a solders menu there's an option for it. If you don't have any unused attachments it will be greyed out.
That is....
Unless you killed the one with the loot using explosives, then it will all be destroyed by said explosion. Basically, just try to avoid landing the killing blow with grenades and rockets.
At least until you find the one with the loot, at which point it's time to go weapons free on all his friends
Somewhat ironically this is far easier to do on higher difficulties where explosives are far less likely to just OHK everything.
You can also find these loot items in some mission rewards, from Supply Raid missions and you can buy them from the Black Market. Though typically, more so in the early game, most will be coming from those Loot drops.
Thanks for all that, seriously, but you didn't answer my main question, lol. It states out loud in a voice over when you research modular that the troops can add them to their weapons in the field. By that I assume they pick them up from dead alien then have an option to immediately add them to their weapons. This is the option I have yet to find.
So in other words, like everything in the game you need to prepare these things back at base before sending your troops out to combat.
Hence why I mentioned where you can find the option to do so. That bit was very specifically the answer to your question, the rest was largely just context.
Very long winded context.
Eg. Attach a scope for more+aim.
Laser for more crit etc.
The map usually has a single enemy with a loot.
If the Chosen is on the map usually his summoned adds has a second loot.
Killing with explosives destroyed the loot.
Loot can be many things including weapon attachments.
Afaik you can not freely change(add, remove) weapon attachments until you get that continent bonus or cover ops bonus.
As always during the missions you can not change anything it is always pre-mission where you assign the gear this included covert ops where soldiers could get ambushed.
If the soldier who picked up the loot dies,he/she will drop the loot so you need to pick it up.
