XCOM 2
need advice to start well
Hello.

I'm new to the game, I chose the easy difficulty to start, but after a few missions I systematically come across a snake king who kills my entire squad, in detail he catches a soldier with his tongue then kills him in 2 hits. The problem is that he seems to have hundreds of life points.

What did I miss or do wrong?

The snake king is DLC, and how he turns up depends on what starting options you picked when setting up your game.
While it is possible to take him in the early game you do need to know exactly what you're doing. And you already said that you're new, so here's a better option.

Assuming you have all the DLC are are playing in WotC selected from the games launcher.
When setting up a new game you will eventually come to this screen.

If you aren't playing with WotC, then it'll only have the bottom two options.

Highly recommend deselecting Lost And Abandoned. It acts as the tutorial to WotC and like the games normal tutorial games the game way harder than it needs to be to tell some extra story and not really teach you anything useful.

For the options below it also would recommend deselect "Integrated Downloadable Content". Then directly select the option below it called Alien Hunters "The Nest".
If you're playing without WotC you can just skip to that second bit.
This way you will never run into a giant snake monster until you, personally, want to fight it. Or you just run out of bigger guns to research, whichever comes first.

Not selecting the other option just means you can build big robots sooner and miss out on one of the more fun (also challenging) DLC missions of the game.

If you did as above, then about a month or two into a new campaign there will be a green event with what will look like a crashed ship. Strongly recommend you grab this within a month or two of it turning up.
It contains a bunch of free weapons of varying power. The grenade is god tier. But if the person with them dies on a mission you loose the weapon for good.
Some months after you get those weapons a while mission site turns up with it's own little event. Looks like skulls on spikes. This is the mission that will make you fight a giant snake monster.
Like all white missions there is NO need to rush to do them. Ignore Bradford. All white missions will wait until you are ready to do them. And unlike other White missions this one doesn't need to be done to win the game.
Thanks for the answer. I already see on your screen that I don't have the same thing. I have the nest and the lost towers but not war of chosen, I don't know if it's normal while I checked in steam all the DLC are installed?
On the map of the game I started, I see a white building in a red zone, I guess that's what's not urgent? The avatar project if I understood correctly.

For now I've done missions where there were crates, and missions at the headquarters with a red building on fire.

I really followed things in the order in which they appear because I don't understand much lol, but what I find strange is that I unlocked magnetic and gauss weapons for example but I have no resources to make them.

In the base there seem to be a dozen soldiers, half of whom are injured because of the missions.

I'm a little lost, maybe I should watch some videos.

That just means you're playing the vanilla Xcom2 and not the War Of The Chosen DLC version.
It's like the normal version, except twice the file size, some bits are harder, other bits are easier and if you ask for advice on how to play make sure to mention that you're playing without it or half the advice you get won't make a lick of sense :steamhappy:.

Basically, if you don't want to fight a giant snake monster just make you directly select the option called Alien Hunters "The Nest" when starting a new campaign.
There's no way to prevent this fight in your current campaign.
I also recommend starting with the tutorial firmly turned off.

If you have any troops you've grown fond of go find them in the barracks and look for an option called "Add to character pool". Clicking this will allow them to turn up in your future games.
Also useful if (read: when) they die in missions.

Trying to describe missions in this game is a little pointless. Only the White missions will ever be close to happening the same way and the only thing the rest have in common is what colour they are (which determines their mission type).

Watching some videos is not a bad call, it could help explain things like expanding your territory to get more resources. The game also has a VERY well stocked wiki. Fair warning, it's not a short read.

*Edit*
I also agree with the guy below that no matter what you're first campaign, win or loose, will likely be a complete mess.
This game has a nick name of "The dark souls of strategy games".

That's the black site, a story-related mission, so yes, avatar-related. Rule of thumb you can postpone it and other story objectives as long as you want, provided you can control the avatar clock.

Usually when you get mag weapons you should have resources to build them or at least one of them (mag assault rifle or mag shotgun), but it depends on your success on a raid mission. One type of raid mission is the mission with the aforementioned crates.

You don't really need to watch videos, and there's no need to stress too much. Your first campaign is gonna be a mess regardless. Take what you learnt and improve.

If you have specific questions post them here, someone will help you out.
Good luck.

Thanks for your answers. I restarted a new campaign with the advice given and it's much easier to start :D

However I don't see an option to start something other than vanilla... Maybe you have to finish the campaign at least once?

The option to start with WotC is found in the games launcher, not within the game itself as they are, effectively, different games. Your character pool should transfer over (I think) but your games saves will not.
Oh yeah in the steam launch options. And when you say two different games, does that mean we can do two stories? Or is it better to launch the DLC directly to have everything? If you know what I mean...? It doesn't matter if I have to start over again, I've trained well :D

This is why I used the word "effectively". It's the same story, just some more added to it, but about double the content. Also faster loading times.
Please note that included in that doubled content are both the things that help you kill the enemy and the things that will be actively trying to kill you :steammocking:.

Personally, and if you don't mind starting over from the beginning....again...., I would say to jump right in to it. Overall it is the far more fun of the two.
If all else fails and you get drowned out in all the new bits that lowering the difficulty doesn't help you can always drop back down to the vanilla version.
But this time knowing what awaits you when you inevitably climb back up.

*Edit*
It also comes with some "Advanced" starting options that can make the early game easier. Found on this screen.

Doubled turn timers and the Doom clock are as you expect.
Beta strike can make the earlier game easier, but the later game harder. Wouldn't recommend for a first run.
For the hero options, Stalker is the safest bet. They're master scouts. Though the other two are not without merit. Skirmishers are easy to get the hang of. Templars are powerful, but very dependent on melee attacks.

I started pretty well this time, but there are still things that are not going well.

For example, it happens very often that the shots do not hit, sometimes the whole squad for two turns, so I use grenades but it destroys the loot.

Sometimes two turns go by without me being able to do an action...

I will restart with the DLC to test it out, we'll see :) thanks for the advice.
Hello there.

I have some questions about things I don't quite understand:

In what order should buildings be built?

How do I stop the Chosen One's progression? (mission locked).

I started a game in the DLC without choosing factions and I got the snipers, is it not possible to start with the basic headquarters? You know the simple soldiers... in the advanced options before starting the campaign you can choose between 3 things but it's each time a specialized headquarters.

Is it useful to recruit? I have tons of soldiers who do nothing now that I manage my missions better I have a lot less injuries.

People argue about which building first. Resistance Ring or Guerilla Tactics School generally considered best option with the other one being second.

For third Proving Grounds or Infirmary often advised. I prefer a Power Relay because either of those depends on having an engineer and I want them excavating first. Lab though is another possibility. Sometime you will want to slip in Resistance Comms. Avoid Workshop.

You will need to increase your supply of soldiers because of fatigue. You can get a lot of those through scanning and rewards but some recruiting is usually needed.

To get rid of the Chosen you need the Resistance Ring and can then do Covert Ops to open up the ability to attack the Chosen directly.

How do we get this item that allows us to attack the chosen ones? It's already halfway through and it says I'll lose if it becomes full _-_

You don't loose if it becomes full. You get a base defense mission if it becomes full.
Basically you get to send out 10 people all at once against a whole lot of enemies, plus the chosen in question.
While there's a turn timer (of sorts) on the mission it comes from a bunch of objects on the map shooting at your ship. Destroy them and the timer slows down until it comes to a stop when they're all gone.
Mostly this mission acts as a giant exp farm.

It's one of two types of base invasion and the more common to happen of the two.

If you can get your hands on a Turret Wreck (i.e. one that wasn't killed with explosives) you can build a room called the Defense Matrix. On top of making the Chosens attempts to sabotage less likely to work, but it also gives you 2 (four if upgraded) turrets on base defense missions. Good for helping fend off the early enemies.
If you have an engi in the room when an attack happens, then these turrets now have squadsight (like the snipers). This makes them infinitely more useful as they can now be used to shoot the objectives.

----

To be able to attack the chosen you need to have the Resistance Ring built (I'm on team "build this first"). You then need to go the covert ops called "Hunt the Chosen".
Troops sent out on cover ops from this room can get exp, give you certain bonuses and/or extra resources. If you do enough Hunt the Chosen mission from them with your starting faction you can get an op to grab a second hero unit.

When it comes to invading the chosens home base to get rid of them once and for all, don't be in a rush.
This is partly because you will only get the one shot at this, if you fail you don't get a do-over.
This is also partly because while at the start of the game the chosen are a giant threat, towards the end of the game you will find they don't pack the punch they used to and can be farmed for easy exp and AP points :steamhappy:.

One word of advice on covert ops. If it lists a penalty of "Captured" and you can't see a way to cancel out the chance, just avoid that op. There are few things in this game more irritating and worth going out of your way to avoid than a captured soldier.

That sounds like the Avatar progress not the Chosen.
