If you launch through Steam you can choose your launch option, if you've never done it there should be a popup asking what you want to launch. If you at some point did select, you can change it in your library - right-click XCOM2, go Properties, and on the General tab there's a Launch Options pulldown. Either of the 2 mod launcher options will let you choose either version of the game before you start, or you can default directly to WOTC. But you have to launch through Steam.
That said, the AML is still extremely useful in checking for mod conflicts and corruption.
Or instead of clicking Play you could right-click, copy the link and paste it in the "url" tab when you open the "properties" of the desktop shortcut. For some reason it opens something similar to the launcher. I've told it in a post weeks ago.

It didn't work when I first tried, but got one working now.
To be clear the WotC button that you right click on is "Play Now" and I had to make a shortcut from scratch. I couldn't paste into the broken one.
Thanks for the tip!
All my mods are loading fine with the "old" mod launcher option.
