XCOM 2

This is not X-COM 2. This is X-COM 4.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very, very much looking forward to this game.

However, it is misnamed. Counting only "proper" XCOM games*, this is the fourth one:
1. X-COM: UFO Defense
2. X-COM: Terror From The Deep
3. X-COM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within
4. This one.

I forgive you for what was no doubt an innocent mistake, Firaxis. Now that it's clear that the real name of this upcoming masterpiece is actually X-COM 4 (or whatever subtitle you want to append in lieu of the number, that's fine too), let's get cracking and change the website and stuff. Come along, chop-chop.

----------------------------

* A "proper" X-COM game is defined as a game with the X-COM name that contrasts strategic base, personnel, and resource management one one hand with turn-based tactical squad combat on the other. In other words, games with the X-COM name but none of the original's gameplay are not really X-COM games. So let us forget them all as completely as possible.

It is actually XCOM 2. You see X-COM is not the same as XCOM.

So you're just glossing over Apocalypse?

And, yeah, as Thunderbolt said, X-Com and XCOM are not the same series. XCOM is a reboot, so it doesn't follow the main series numbering.

Yes.

It's a separate continuity with a subtly different name.

Plus Apocalypse totally fits the criteria you listed in the OP.

Don't forget the best one out of all of those, "Xenonauts". An indie game here on steam inspired by the original X-Com and probably the best there is. It is infinitely better than X-Com.

I highly, highly recommend it as one of the best games I've ever played

I've heard good things, but even if you weren't exaggerating for effect it doesn't bear the brand so it doesn't count in the naming scheme.

Another superb game here on Steam along the same lines is Dead State, which is essentially the X-COM concept applied to a zombie apocalypse.

Someone else also bought the game llicence or maybe just copied the game.. can't remember who they are.. but there's now been dozens of reiterations of ufo enemy unknown.

It's the 2nd in the line of Firaxis and that's all that really matters. In fact, if you take all of the predecessors, they are all just UFO. Reskinned, resold.

Xcom2, is actually a different idea derived from the first, to it is the first true xcom2 there has even been.

Not including the CENEGA titles in the list?
UFO Aftermath
UFO Aftershock
UFO Afterlight
Tyrant Nov 8, 2015 @ 6:54am
cenegas UFO is not xcom titles they are spiritual succesors, and if those counted then xenonauts should be on the list aswell.

however there are alot of Xcom titles already but theyw ere never numberd
so the first xcom that firaxis did was a reboot and now they are doing xcom 2

I'm aware; I used the American title to make things (hopefully) slightly more distinct.

Also, who cares about Europe? (j/k)

Ah ah ah, the Xenonauts propaganda brigade. That game is OK at best, and your comment has nothing to do with the topic. GTFO.

Oh, such gallant and virtuous defenders the Steam boards have! I may swoon. :steamhappy:

Also, Xenonauts is no more or less than a reskin of the original X-COM. They did streamline a handful of things, like not having to buy missiles or basic ammo for instance, but it's fundamentally the same game. I have logged many enjoyable hours playing it, but I think of it as replaying an old favorite rather than playing a new game. :)

Well, i'll be an optimist and accept this as XCOM 2, with XCOM: Ufo Defense (1994, MicroProse) being XCOM1. :)
