What is the avatar project?

This thread is to speculate and discuss the avatar project.

The avatar project has clearly been shown to be the timeline Xcom has to work against. But what is it?

My guess is that it has something to do with continuing the etherials agenda from EU. Or somekind of mass mind control like in the base attack in EW, in order to draw everyone into city centers so the advent can keep track of them or experiment on them

I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that whatever it is can be summed up in this perfectly mathematical formula:

Human DNA + Alien DNA = Crazy cool alien unit (+ plus that freaky splash art)

Well I think we can safely say it's not directly related to squashing XCOM.

Most likely it has something to do with actively destroying humanity. Otherwise I can't see why XCOM couldn't continue to fight after the project.

The aliens are throwing people into a big blender to find the right mix of alien and human DNA to create the perfect specimen, possibly to fight back at the vague threat alluded to in EU/EW.

Maybe the avatar project is to inject people minds with something, I don't know how they administer it. But their objective is to create a hive mind to all humanity.

Are they building a huge beacon that can transmit brainwave so the Ethereals could control humanity? or distributing some kind of nano bugs through food and water to be consumed by humans then they activate that bug to control humanity?... dunno.

If I'm not mistaken, an Avatar is a divine being, a representation of a God. They created an avatar project by that philosophy, to create divine being - a hive mind - through all humanity. So all human will be acting like one supreme being, just like in the cover art.

That's my speculation, what's yours?

That makes a lot of sense. I think that the hive mind is very likley the alien's end goal. Although the aliens seemed to have that kind of tech in EU, so why bother invading earth in the first place?

Maybe humans are the most perfect creature they have ever encountered. Humans have enough requirement for their agenda, maybe it's about their physical and mental capacities? I don't know.

As far as I had remembered, Ethereals were traveling from planets to planets and meeting different alien species like sectoids, mutons, chrysalids and do experiments on them. Looks like they are building some kind of army. An army to fight for their galactic domination, maybe? who knows.

Humans have phsycic abilities, and the aliens want to make us of it. They are still abducting humans, putting them in those containers, and creating green goo out of it, as we saw in those recent XCom 2 videos. This "green goo" is the part of the human DNA that does have that rare and special phsycic potential. With this, they wanna make some kind of special human that has enough phsycic potential to act as an avatar for the etherals without loosing some of their abilities. They can thus have a body with their full phsycic potentiel, and a fit body. The body we see those etherals are just weak and fragile, and it doesnt give them their full phsycic potential. That is the reason you have that alien/human hybrid at as the cover art. This human/alien is made up of thousands humans, as presented with those skulls. Disturbing art if you ask me.

This is just my guess, and I guess we see 5. February.

Following what happened in the first game, I personally think that the Ethereals are harvesting human DNA to enhance their own frail bodies or abandon their old bodies entirely and transfer their consciousnesses into new, superior human DNA infused shells.

We could only harm the ethereals when they materialized in their temporary forms, otherwise they couldn't interact with us, we couldn't touch them. However, someone made a device that managed to transverse multiple planes of existence, and keep the ethereals bound, IN their ethereal plane. Remember that crystal that popped out of the ethereal we stunned? That crystal is the only part that permanently resides in the physical plane, the ethereal's physical form manifests around it. To think we did that in what, 2-3 years with a normal game? Along with developing weaponry we can only dream of currently, discovering what else our brains can do, and such. But imagine, a human with the psionic prowess of an ethereal. The ingenuity, strength, and fortitude of a human, mixed with the willpower and general intelligence of ethereals. The psionic energy would be capable of killing things without the need for a weapon, or even armor. We haven't even seen the ethereals' full powers yet. We know they posses strong psionic capabilities, but that is about it. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hell, that turned into a rant quickly.

I think you got the outriders and the etherals mixed up.... the ehterals, despite the name, or physical beings, where outriders are kinda energy constructs.
