Have we reached the pinnacle of video game programming.
I think where just about there. The main reason is coding is and always will be a man hour intensive task. That will never change. It takes 1000s of man hours to code a AAA game. Graphics could change a little. Get a little better but they are already almost photo realistic. I don't think games will change much from this point forward.

Many games these days you cannot ask for much more from graphics. they look better than real life actaully. More colorful and beautiful for sure. I would not want photo realistic actually. This game for example photo realistic..No thanks...please.

Bogus.

Here is why.

licensing technology.

Your typical game uses numerous licensed technology in them which means a more complex game, but without the game being burdened by creating it all themselves. It's why we have games that release is short times and why the overall products are much more refined.

Basically this thread is balls city with a premise that is absurd.

Thats not how it works.. I code games in Unity and other technologies. You still have to write the code and its still just as complex. All the techologies give you is more things you can do. More functions and methods. Easier ways to an end. Games don't write there own code.

Graphics can get way better, but we will not notice past a certain point... More importantly is getting all games to run at higher Frames per second (60+ FPS), which will add more than future graphics improvments are going to add

Probably not.

If the game looks so amazing, why doesn't it look like crysis 3? There's still plenty of advancements to be made for games. I think we have explored most of the gameplay, but things like graphics, AI, complexity (endlessly big worlds with crazy advanced AI), is still something we need to improve.

It's gonna take like 15 years before people can't tell a movie from a game. Another 2 console generations sounds about right.

True, but it does free the games programmers to write things that are specific for their game. Odds are we're going to see increasing advances in AI toolkits in additional to ways to create and modify graphics assets to make for a more varied and immersive experience for example.

In most games every NPC's model or face is stil hand made. While games like the Sims 4 have shown us that current technology allows for reasonable graphics with facial expressions that can be assigned to randomly generated characters all of which would make it easier for a programmer to have every single person in a crowd scene look different.

In time this sort of capability will likely turn into a part of standard engines further expanding the reach of the average game programmer. As audio synthesizers improve we might also see every NPC "voice acted" even in lower cost games. So yeah, we're not anywhere near the pinnacle yet. :)

Development cost is the stopper. And we have reached how many hours can be put into a game and still sell it for $60. That is why we are at the pinnacle. Not because games can not be more complex.

There are always people who say "now is the end of technology, I cannot see any possible progress".
They are always wrong.

Cost to make vs amount to be made is the bottom line. That completelly determines how far the technolgy can go. Its not what we can do. Its what we can afford to do.

Or not. I mean... you say that and I say the opposite, without proof or facts it's just wind, like this thread btw.

Edit: And you saying it's a fact... doesn't make it a fact... just so we be clear :D

This sounds pretty accurate. Even right now without a price raise, like the one from $50 to $60 a few years ago, games either have to be huge successes or they don't pay out.

All those man hours coding need to be paid hours.
