What is this game like?

Is this game a RTS like AOE? I'm kind of confused what type of game this is. I have never played an XCOM game before.

Turn based squad level tactics game combined with a time management strategic game where you manage your resources. The videos provide good insight, but XCOM is turn based strategy without being the same formula as a Civ-like game.

XCOM is split in two: the strategic layer where you have R&D, base building and resource management and then the tactics layer, the turn-based meat of the game, where a small squad of soldiers fights off the alien invaders. Both are integral part of the XCOM experience.

If i may suggest, there is a demo of Enemy Unknown, give it a try and you will immediately know if it or X2 is for you.

XCOM is made of Strategic and Tactical strategies, placing your men in a fight is Tactical thinking, and you'll need to think quick and careful. The Strategic comes in base construction, resource management, and choice/consequence missions.
