[returning user] war of the chosen compatibility
hey guys,
recently i redownloaded Xcom2 and tried playing with mods.
and ive run into a little bit of a problem.
when i try to use mods, the game says its incompatible because i dont have the 'war of the chosen' dlc.
what i cont understand is, that i do have the mod.
is there a reason why the mods are incompatible?
- ive tried old and new mods to see if they work, but some mods regardless of when they wer made, aren't compatible...
has anyone run into the same problem?
...help?

thnks!

Can you post a screenshot of the error message?

The launcher defaults to starting original XCOM 2. Are you selecting to start War of the Chosen?

Some mods are for WOTC only.

XCOM 2 is several different levels of the same game. The two primary games are XCOM 2 legacy and XCOM 2 WOTC and then you have some DLC.

XCOM 2 legacy mods do not work with XCOM 2 WOTC and XCOM 2 WOTC mods do not work with XCOM 2 legacy as your #1 general rule. When you are looking at a mod page, this information is on the right side of the screen if WOTC is required or if any of the DLC is required for a mod.

Then just to confuse you even more, there are two overhaul mods for Long War with one for legacy and one for WOTC. Many, but not all, mods will cross over between their respective base game and long war. If they have a mod requirement, this too is listed to the right on the mod page.

If this is information you will have difficulty sorting and maintaining, while it will not cover all aspects of conflicts, the Alternative Mod Launcher does give much of the base information you need to know if mods are supported and in what combinations.

I have been playing the war of chosen mod since Oct 2021, today, Jan 31 2022, the game launcher says I own it, but doesn't show me button to play it anymore. Too bad, great game, when it works. turns laggy after 30 mins play, now wont even start? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ launcher.

This is the link to the AML. It is very simple to use. Download, open the zip file (I put mine in XCOM 2/AML folder), run it, select XCOM 2 (or Chimera Squad if you will use it for that, but Chimera Squad mods launch fine in the regular launcher), browse to the path if it does not find it automatically, best is to shut it down and open again to make sure it is populated with all the mods you have, then select what mods you will play and click Launch WOTC. If you have legacy XCOM 2, same thing, choose the launch button for XCOM 2.

Once the AML is opened, when you select mods, if they have a dependency it will show the dependency is missing when it is no selected. Mods where the modder reused a core file name will show up as conflicts if there is another mod using the same core file name. Unfortunately, when modders make their own specifically named mod files which alter vanilla core files in loading, the AML does NOT show conflicts as it proceeds to use the last modification loaded as the primary. Just to note, when it doesnt crash, some of my most interesting and enjoyable games came from silently conflicting mods where the loading changes stacked changing only what was different in the next same file.

Also in the AML, if you scroll to the right it will tell you what game a mod is for be it XCOM 2 or XCOM 2 WOTC. NOTE: There are some mods which cross over, and these will say they do on the workshop mod page.

As for the lag... NVMe is the BEST high speed device to play XCOM 2 from, SATA SSD is the next best. On an HDD, you will just have lag at times no matter what.

It should be noted, the more mods you add, the slower it will also go especially if you have the my documents folder on your primary OR game drive. Documents, pictures, music, etc work best for XCOM 2 being on a THIRD hard drive with a page file also added in support to both game and files drives.

Active reference points in a running game of XCOM 2 including WOTC are primary hard drive interacting with drivers and OS, wherever your documents folder is located, where your game files are located, your page file, and your address space file.

Optimal setup...
C drive OS, address space and page file
D drive, game files and page file
E drive, default documents location and page file

Shut down indexing on your hard drives
Shut down any not currently used programs including especially Edge, Chrome, or whatever browser you use, any explorer windows, and any active adware/malware scanning program. If all you are doing is playing XCOM 2 locally, shut down your antivirus as well.

If you are not running any other operating systems in a virtual environment, booting into BIOS and turning off virtualization, saving, and rebooting will also decrease demand on system resources which are reserved for something you are not even using.
