Seriously, though, it depends. I find the assassin to be the most problematic due to the fact that she doesn't miss with her sword.
- Iron-man mode, I think Assassin is the hardest since you can't just reload a save to figure out where she is hiding. You are forced to waste an action throwing a Battle Scanner.
- The strengths & weaknesses are somewhat randomized, so depending on how many buffs they get (and what they are) before killing a particular Chosen, may make 1 tougher than the others.
- Finally, mods. I have done many differently modded campaigns, and that has made 1 or another Chosen more difficult than the others.
I honestly can't chose 1 Chosen over the other choices for easiest/ hardest.
Late game the Warlock is the easiest thanks to Mindshields that basicly negates all his psionic attacks, but early game he is the hardest as he can take out half your squad or more if you are unlucky.
The Assassin is average in the entire game and that is mostly because she tend to get the first hit if you fail to uncover her with a reaper or a scout of some sort.
And depending of the trait they receive they can even be more of a pain.
Of course Vanilla they are pretty easy to deal with, I liked to keep the Assassin around because well... I like her. Not in LWOTC tho I always try to kill her first and I want to avoid her because with +25 HP on a mission with 4-5 soldiers I wouldn't be able to kill her in just 1 turn, + she is guarranteed to injure a soldier wich is not good since I play with Red fog and you'll never know when you'll need a medikit.
I find hunter the hardest. He doesnt waste time trying to stun your troops; he just opens fire.
Of course, it all depends on what perks they have. In my last run, the Assassin had blast shield, soul steal, and Mechlord. Her weakness, of course, was groundling. During the final battle in her lair, she summoned up 9 mechs in total... it was a nightmare.
Following this idea the warlock would, I'd have said, be the easiest to kill.
• Hunter : Tracking shot is not a big issue, dazing/bleeding pistol can be a bit dangerous if you spread your soldier around the map and the stun grenade on the other hand is dangerous if you keep your soldier close together.
• Assassin : Big mobility and it seems she doesn't trigger overwatch when she's going for "Parting Silk", her melee strike which is guaranteed to hit. Blinding grenades are a bit annoying but not actually dangerous. Harbor Wave can push your soldier from cover and daze them, could be worse because vanilla IA tend to avoid shooting at dazed soldiers.
• Warlock : Constantly summon explosive spectral zombie when not engaged in close combat.
Mind Scorch punish grouped soldiers, his mind control is harder to break because Chosens are immune to mental debuff like Disorient/Stun, so if he succeed taking control of a soldier your best option is to kill the Warlock, or damage him enough to force him to go into his "Spectral Army" stasis which summon spectral lancers. (You could also stun or stasis the mind controlled soldier, or make their lvl 2 bondmate walk next to them to remove mental impairement.)
I have to say depending on the map, Hunter has the potential to become the hardest of the bunch. He is a death trap when he randomly decides to crash the party in a Lost mission, spawning endless hordes without a care while never staying in one place thanks to numerous rooftops & balconies.
i honestly dont know how the hell i got out of that one with no one dead or captured. only 1 soldier got injured.
there was so many lost even the assassin was attacking them and getting revealed as she was moving up to me lol.
hell yea the hunter CAN be hard i had 2 dead to show for it in another game save (1 person 1 robot) i just could not get to her quick enough to many 2 story buildings. then again another mission the hunter is easily killed in 1 turn.
i can honestly say i have never really had a problem with the hunter until that one mission (attacking a random alien facility)
id say if there are huge buildings everywhere and close together (2 stories) and the hunter shows up you might want to recall if on iron man. i would.
The Assassin is very predictable. She will run straight at your squad and arrive in 2-3 turns after you get revealed, and can usually be spotted by a Reaper or Phantom Ranger before reaching you, at which point you easily gun her down.
The Hunter's tracking shots are a bit irritating but that's all. The problem with fighting him is that cover is effectively worthless since he moves so far and can grapple each turn, and due to the bleeding every hit on an early game soldier is a guaranteed down (I THINK bleeding always causes them to be downed rather than dying).
The warlock is the hardest in the early game because the spectral zombies waste precious time and ammo (or, if you're in a resistance mission with allies, they'll almost assuredly blow it up in your face and there's nothing you can do about it), Mind Scorch has a tendency to hit more people than the other dazing attacks, and you have no ability to protect against Mind Control yet.
These can, of course, change if the right strengths and weaknesses get involved. A Chosen with Reaper and Explosive weakness is pretty much just automatically the easiest.
