Do Mutons always counter a melee attack?
As it says.

Not sure if I've just had bad luck, but whenever I've tried to use a Ranger's melee attack on a Muton, they always block it and counter-attack, causing damage and usually a debuff such as Disorient, Stun or Unconcious.

Does this always happen when you try and melee them? I know that Blademaster attacks get through.

MAYBE if they're disoriented,they would not. Can't confirm it though.

To my shock I absentmindedly ordered a ranger to melee one earlier today... and it didn't counter attack. If you look at the actual skill when you mind control one it says:

"Counterattack: Chance to ignore melee damage and instantly respond with a melee strike of their own. "

Obviously it's a very good chance but apparently not 100%.

[XComGame.X2Ability_Muton]
BAYONET_STUN_CHANCE=0
EXECUTE_RANGE=144
EXECUTE_DAMAGE_AMOUNT=100
COUNTERATTACK_RANGE=144
COUNTERATTACK_DODGE_AMOUNT=66

So.... does that translate to 66%?
gimmethegepgun Mar 9, 2016 @ 10:01pm
Muton's counterattack is defined as COUNTERATTACK_DODGE_AMOUNT = 66 in DefaultGameData_SoldierSkills so it looks like it's a 66% chance. Unless it works the way dodge is, which means 66% chance, unless your chance to hit is higher than 100% then it starts dropping.

If that counterattack is supposed to be 66% then something is seriously ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken somewhere.

Yea, I was expecting like.... 70 or even 80%

I have honestly never seen them not counter a melee and this is the first time I was even aware it wasn't just a guaranteed hit. I just stopped trying because I assumed they always said No, You Cannot and then hit the guy trying.

Low sample size.

Even though it's not guaranteed, by the laws of XCOM, any chance of failure means it WILL fail. So don't do it anyway.

I guess it's like coming from the other direction of rocket attacks in EU. Instead of one in ten guys saying "Hold my beer while I take this shot" every ranger charges in with a Yuengling Tallboy and 10% of the time he doesn't ♥♥♥♥ it up.

I've seen one fail to stop a Mind Controlled Archon once. The Archon missed anyway, but at least he wasn't countered.

If it works like dodge (I don't know if it does) then it's possible that it can only trigger off of hits.

Also mostly unrelated, but evidently the muton's melee can cause hacked turrets to go unconscious. THAT was a surprise lol

They don't but I still wouldn't recommend trying out.

Strange fact is about berserker who dont counter attack, i mean... they are THE melee specialist and i know they are reckless and dont care about their own live blablabla anyway i fell strange to be afraid to send my ranger slash a goliath and no problem at all agaisnt a berserker. And i only see 3-4 in all my game and it was felling like "ho a big pink sissy", berserker need to be re-wordek...badly

why not have a cursory glance at multiplayer mode which lets you study all the enemy abilities in some level of detail?
PingvinSalat Mar 10, 2016 @ 4:02am
lol so its not 100% :O i mustve been very unlucky then -.- muton have counterattacked me every time ive tried to melee them. In fact its happened so many times that i dont even consider doing it anymore
