To my shock I absentmindedly ordered a ranger to melee one earlier today... and it didn't counter attack. If you look at the actual skill when you mind control one it says:
"Counterattack: Chance to ignore melee damage and instantly respond with a melee strike of their own. "
Obviously it's a very good chance but apparently not 100%.
BAYONET_STUN_CHANCE=0
EXECUTE_RANGE=144
EXECUTE_DAMAGE_AMOUNT=100
COUNTERATTACK_RANGE=144
COUNTERATTACK_DODGE_AMOUNT=66
So.... does that translate to 66%?
Yea, I was expecting like.... 70 or even 80%
I have honestly never seen them not counter a melee and this is the first time I was even aware it wasn't just a guaranteed hit. I just stopped trying because I assumed they always said No, You Cannot and then hit the guy trying.
Even though it's not guaranteed, by the laws of XCOM, any chance of failure means it WILL fail. So don't do it anyway.
I guess it's like coming from the other direction of rocket attacks in EU. Instead of one in ten guys saying "Hold my beer while I take this shot" every ranger charges in with a Yuengling Tallboy and 10% of the time he doesn't ♥♥♥♥ it up.
Also mostly unrelated, but evidently the muton's melee can cause hacked turrets to go unconscious. THAT was a surprise lol
