Saving an existing soldier to a character pool

Let's say I'm playing the game the first time and have some fine looking characters. I'm near the end of the game and I'd like to save all my current characters to the pool, so that they areavailable next time I play the game. What is the proper procedure for thay?

Go to customize and then scroll to the bottom below attitude should be a button that says save to character pool.

I think you have to do it for each character, there's no "save all soldiers to character pool" button as far as I am aware. I'm also wondering if saving a soldier to the character pool multiple times overwrites the previous ones or if you get multiple versions of the same soldier..
