How does unconscious soldiers work?
So far when the aliens have shot up one of my guys, they've always died on the spot except in one case. In that case I thought I could use my Specialist's revive ability to wake him up, but he was not targetable. Instead I was able to pick him up and carry him to the extraction point. I finished the mission and the score screen showed 0 deaths.

But when I arrived at the Avenger he was shown as KIA on the promotion screen, and he was dead for the rest of the game. Is this a bug or was I supposed to do something to prevent him from dying after getting him on the Skyranger?

As long as you evaced before the bleedout timer ran out, he should've been fine, so that's a bug.
Revival Protocol can't get bleeding out soldiers back up. Stabilize (from medkit) or Gremlin Stabilize (if you have Medical Protocol) will make them stop bleeding out and just be Unconscious, at which point you can use Revival Protocol on them to make them start fighting again.

i think you have to actually call Firebrand and manually evac your unconscious dude with another soldier (not sure though)

It was a mission with a predetermined extraction point. Maybe it does not work with those. Or maybe he was already dead, but the game didn't count it properly.

He may have bled out or died because you do have the option to pick up a dead soldier (if the mission requires Evac) so that you don't lose any unique items they may have equipped. I mean... because you don't leave a soldier behind.

depend what you call insconsious. If it s after a shot, like you wrote it, you have a few turns to stabilize him with medikit. If your soldiers is unsconscious, but still have hit points after a lancer attack, there is no reason he died.

Exception however. I had once to evacuate urgently an insconscious soldier who was near a vehicle in falme near to explode, and an other time one was a risk to burn alive near a building in flame. I presume a soldier insconscious can also die if poisonned before or after his current state. After can probably occurs with viper poisonous aoe.

Specialist : There is a skill in the tree to remove bad effect. I never try it, simply because possession is not listed in the bad effect that can be removed ... and of course it s the one I want to remove as top priority.

If after mission stats showed 0 dead and post mission lineup showed him KIA, that's a bug.

If you had to evac to end the mission and did not pick them up and take them with you they will get left behind.

It does this with peeps you had to leave behind it will say 0 dead but will show they got captured in the promo screen. I think its along those same lines but since he was bleeding out instead he died later instead of getting captured.

I keep getting this now im on commander or higher, 70% lancers unconscious my soldier. Now this hasnt actually happened on a evac mission only a supply raid and retalliation.

and both times he had life left and the effect to remove him from battle but I got a good rating for letting one soldier die and be reported as KIA even though he wasnt dead...

Normally I would take a squad size upgrade and run 2 specs but chasing this quad of four achievement makes it a lot harder. nothing you can do accounting for a 2 stun lancer pod arriving from fog of war you hadnt encountered while fighting another pod rendering your tactics and overwatch trap kind of useless.....
