I'm talking about the mission where you have to protect it, not hack it
Even then, there's no guarantee that they won't take cover behind the objective which can cause all sorts of trouble if you're on a timer.
It's even worse for me. The thing was light on fire on turn 1 when an alien decided to shoot at it.
There was not was for me to keep that from hapening. Friggin' unfair!
Edit: Would also add a sense of actually defending something by way of *protecting the device*
Edit 2: Could even add an area of effect fire extiguisher that could possibly be used to save an endangered EVAC zone on top of burning buildings.
Edit 3: This area of effect skill could even nuetralize poisonous ground and so forth,making it usefull to forge a clear path to advance in the same turn,rather than waiting for detrimental ground effects to subside or going around detrimental ground effects.
Edit 4: It would also add an interesting choice for players in terms of squad composition and loadout in the late game for this mission type at least ... instead of *more fire power*,which adds viability to a wider range of classes,skills,items and tactics.
However, this type of mission is really badly designed, in my opinion. Since you are not forced to take it(it is just 1 out of 3 types to select from) I would advise against selecting it without a really compelling reason. Hacking and item retrieval missions offer more possibility for rewards, anyway, since when you hack the objective you can get cool strategic advantages.
The upside is .... that Firaxis and/or modders can actually work with the heightened threat of fire,explosions,detrimental ground effects etc,etc,etc in Xcom 2 to make the game more interesting in ways outside of adding more fire power to get the job done.
Some of these effects are mostly a pain in the rump by way of slowing down the players advance but open the way for Firaxis or modders to add a whole new layer to the tactical combat other than increasing fire power.
=)
The present case;
The VIP who dies in explosion during turn 2, mission auto fails;
The VIP who gets shot at while still in vehicle because you had a line of sight to him through an entire building, windows and vehicle glitch;
The extraction area which became unsecured due to fire and which relocated far too far to save all ppl
Those got me on C/I. It hurts and adds an unwanted challenge, not counting little issues here and there.
edit: It caught fire in turn 1 and deleted itself at turn 4 even though it still had 70% health left. No way to safe it. Had to reload the Campaign Autosave and got a different second mission.
I had to protect device but... Andromeddon attacked the device in second round which started flames on device... It was not possible to kill all enemies until device was destroyed in 2 rounds. One more Andromeddon there, red Mech and many other dangerous enemies there... Really sad. No possibility to win this mission.
I love XCOM series but there are some things which are constantly spoiling the game.
