Which is the best Ranger starting skill?
Remaining concealed or plus 2 on sword? Both seem pretty useful.

Phantom. Hands down.

yep phantom.

That sword skill looks great on paper because you can kill things with it right?

It's really good for about 2 missions whereafter phantom becomes infinitely invaluable for absolutely everything.

Depends how many rangers you are running with.

I would go with 1 Ranger having Phantom/Stealth build to be your scout.

With the others you can go with the sword.

However while the sword is very useful early, it becomes less useful later in the game.

Your sword play cannot attack Muton. Don't waste your skill.

I went full swordsmanship, since remaining in shadows training didn't inspire me much.

Phantom .. the +2 damage of blade master is pointless :P sorry when shotgun have potential to do 25+ damage average with rapid fire ! and have 100% to hit :P

Why would you bring a sword who can miss to a gun fight :P

Grim reaper is sweet. Takes down 3-4 enemies with blade bonuses and fusion sword.

Rapid fire can kill what 1, 2 enemies?

About phantom, I have no clue how to use that really, sounds useless.

Depends on your playstyle. If you like having everyone fight together, but want to send one guy out to the objective with less risk of death-by-overwatch, then go Phantom.

If you're like me and you see the word 'Ranger' and think "SWORD FIGHTING", then get those sword skills raked up because that Ranger is gonna wipe the aliens off the map all by himself. Or, you know, if you like to have everyone together and focused on a single battle at a time.

Just wait until muton become normal spawn in your mission and they come armagedon or berserker.
I will wait and enjoy your complain.

Reaper is a cool ability, but that's it. It's the last ability in the tree, and by the time you get it you have more than enough aoe dmg. You'll only use it to clear trash, which a gunslinger can do without putting themselves at risk.

1 enemy. That's it's strength. It's the hardest hitting ability in the the game, and can put down 30-40 dmg. With talon or armor piercing rounds your ranger can pretty much solo anything.

It's argueably the best ability in the game...

I've spelled it out numerous times already here, and doing so is getting a little old. One more time:

-The shotgun does not miss. The sword does.

-The shotgun does more dmg.

-You get conceal to take fights on your terms.

-You get plenty of other sources of aoe, why would you waste a top tier ability on another when it's counterpart is the hardest hitting single target ability in the game?

I wish blade rangers were more viable, but phantom rangers are just too strong.

Yes he can. A counterattack is a chance, it's not 100%.

You can't rely on CHANCE in commander+ mode

Depends on what difficulty you play on commander shotgun is way better for latter game, swords are just weaker because they can miss and say bye bye to your reaper also enemies dodge a lot so you cant really count on chains unless you want to kill off weaken enemies, for that i was using my gunslinger but i guess you could do it with ranger, but again you have to remember they can miss.

Overall i would say meele was really dissapointing for me i had 3 rangers i was using (2 per mission one was backup). 2 shootgun build and 1 meele, in the late game i never wanted to take meele again after fails he made with swords, out of 3 reapers i used 2 times he completly failes with miss on 1st attack or misss on 2nd.

But in the end its all about team setup, just think of build that will synergize with rest of team.

And phantom is really powerfull becasue thats your spooter/scouter for all missions even those who dont give you stealth at start. Makes retaliation very easy unless there are chrysalids.

I had a ranger for each style of play in my main team and they both dominated in their own ways. The swordsman was great in that she could finish off as many wounded enemies in close proximity as were in her movement range while the OTHER could "one shot" (technically two shot) a sectopod using concealment, phantom and rapid fire so they're both amazing... it's just about how you plan to use them

You will not want to get close to enemy group at late game. It will trigger another enemy patrol sometime and cause your squad doom. Be note that Archon and Sectopod sight of area is enemy of ranger conceal
