Each scientist gives a flat 20% boost to research speed. Lab just increases that bonus.
Early game i really don't need research lab due even though i can research them faster i cannot even build them. Engineers are important in early and mid game due they increase power, give supplies if you keep excavating, also w/out them you cannot build a better armor in the game and etc.
Lol blackmarket can even speeds up some certain research.
I recieved a scientist with a 17% research speed increase
Well I guess he is a ♥♥♥♥ Scientist, I got one with over 20% so it is basically random
Even without a lab, your scientists still grant a bonus to your research speed. Adding a laboratory to the mix just increases the speed a bit more.
Though it's all relatively pointless once you run out of things to research. I may have been spoiled by Enemy Within or Long War, but there do seem to be less research projects this time around.
This is clearly by design cause Christopher Odd was commenting on it in his preview playthrough and he said that it was done for balance reasons. So I get to focus on Engineers, intel, and supplies... Works for me.
Maybe you are playing on lower difficulties then
Yes the lab is a must on higher difficulties imo. You just NEED magnetic and plasma weapons ASAP.
