The first time I did it, I only made it out with 2 soldiers, and one was bleeding out as the other carried her to the evac, but we made it.
The snakes are tough, but softened up just a little and they are just meat for a ranger.
Pretty normal, expected even, considering the viper is the same alien as the thin man, wich constantly crit hit you behind cover and walls...
Also pulled it off with only 4 guys and noone past Corporal. Little note of interest: taking out the blacksite results in Avatar being 2 no matter what. If you can take it down, do it. Just be aware that you're gonna have a bad time if you try to shoot your way through and aren't /very/ careful.
I'd go so far as to say this one of the easiest missions in the game. The deck is stacked so heavily in your favour (conceal, no timers of any kind, loads of cover) that you have to be intentionally making bad decisions for it to go badly wrong.
Having said that... so many snakes on this run. It was like a therapy session for people with snake phobia. Of those 22 I think about 9 were advent.
Be patient, don't let your ranger get revealed, keep your revealed characters over 2 full dashes away. This is a good way to observe and learn enemy A.I. behavior, conceal mechanics, etc.
Yes, the Blacksite mission always has one or more buildings in the beginning where you spawn.
One stealth ranger, two snipers, one grenadier can do this in timed missions without much problem.
There is no enemy AI when engaged from extreme long range with concealment, they don't activate and it's business as usual. If one's savvy enough *most* objectives can be completed before engaging roaming pods.
Alternatively every pod on the map could be killed without retaliation. The only limit to this tactic is LOS issues which can *mostly* be handled up by the grenadier.A lot of mission maps are pretty small and those missions can be finished in a few turns.
I shudder to think what an extra grenadier and sniper could accomplish.
=P
What I meant by AI behavior and conceal mechanics is learning how far you have to be before enemies will try to rush your position as opposed to running around like a chicken with their head cut off. The enemies technically know where your revealed ranger is, they just can't target him or her until they flank your position so sometimes you can see them trying to get around where your ranger is. Knowing what is a good spot to hide your ranger when you are new to the game is not always obvious. Or for example when your ranger is on top of a red revealed spot. Do you panic and attack thinking you will be revealed next turn? Or do you do the right think and just sit tight where unless they actually flank you, you will stay hidden?
These are things that we learn only with experience over time and time you have a plenty on these maps without any pressure.
I've actually never tried to kill the enemies in the main building this way. I imagine you'd have to blow a pretty big hole to get LOS on all of them. Usually by then I figure my other squaddies want some action too.
Lots and lots of Rangers.
At this point in my playthroughs Im still at ballistic weapons and have the team at 5 or 6 units. So I tend to be ranger heavy on this mission because its mostly sectoids and commanders. And both take a beating from melee, so.....slashy-slasy-stab-stab ftw.
