Aliens get free move on my turn???
I dont understand why you did this is the first one, and still dont understand it now, but why do the aliens get to run and grab cover when they spot me, ON MY TURN? Makes ambushing pointless save one shot!

This will always happen when any enemies are spotted, first set the rest of your squad to Overwatch and then engage, all four will shoot (depending on positioning.)

A trick is to put nearly everyone on your squad in overwatch then use 1 person to engage and when the enemies try to run for cover they get rekt.

when you ambush, you're supposed to put everyone else except the first shooter on overwatch.

Overwatch shots used this way don't have an aim penalty.

As the tutorial informs, you're supposed to use overwatch to ambush.

Think about it this way - when you're spotted on the aliens turn at least they don't shoot you on the same turn...

You overwatch. You have to set up overwatches for all but one, and engage with the one. Without concealment it's a bit annoying. You basically have to inch foward and overwatch like EU, but use one guy to go farther up to trigger them. You have to make sure to overwatch everyone before moving your one person up. if you move the person up first, you risk triggering and losing the overwatch chance.

There are work-arounds, but OP still has a point, it is really, really odd.

when aliens spot you and you still have soldiers to move dont you get to move to better cover? yep you have that option. aliens take that option as well.

Some of you dont understand. Its turn based, I move, aliens move. When its my turn to move, and the first guy i move triggers an alien group, they all run and dive in cover. This is a game of reloading saves and point blank misses. I loved the origional so much that i still play and buy this game, but it aggravates the ♥♥♥♥ out of me.
I really loved the fact that in the origional game when you first started, you could load your troop transport up with a bunch of newbies instead of being forced to only have 4 until you research how to figure out how to use the other seats in your avenger.

If the aliend path into me, they take cover and shoot me. when i path into them, they take cover as a free action.

The only time the aliens shoot on the same turn that they encounter you is if they spot a flanked, concealed soldier. And in that instance, they don't also get to run for cover. Most of the time, they just take cover and end turn, so you avoid the same fate that you want to inflict on the aliens.

Getting spotted largely benefits the defender, regardless of whether that means aliens or X-COM.

thats just it though, i dont believe either team should get a free move on the other teams turn. Plus, the game is designed with time constraints that end up forcing you to be aggressive or fast stealthy in every match

I thought they did still have the penalty just that the aliens didn't have any cover so it basically compensates

Overwatch from concealment doesn't have the aim penalty (still no crits though).
Not really worth it once you hit Squaddie though, because then you have useful things you can do other than shooting (mostly grenade launcher), which will be much more reliable. Also lets you focus your fire properly instead of hoping that the most important guys to die get targeted by the shots needed to kill them.

Actually it's easily balanced out, because if the enemies walk on your soldiers during their turn, their moves get wasted running to cover (also triggering any soldiers you have on overwatch), then you get another turn before they get to do anything. They move to cover when first spotted for balancing reasons, if they never moved once discovered, the game would be a cake walk as you can just walk onto a full enemy squad, in which they don't move, don't shoot back, and give you a chance to get full flank shots and so.
Empiro Feb 12, 2016 @ 9:20pm
It's to prevent the players from getting a free turn of shots against exposed enemies, making the game too easy.

After you break concealment, the aliens know you're there. If it really bothers you that much, just pretend that the aliens have an ability called "overwatch move", which they use at the end of their move. It lets them run to cover if they spot you. It's way better than if the aliens used regular overwatch, and all of them shot at the soldier that runs in.
