Long Watch sharpshooter perk
Is there any reason to take this perk as opposed to the also fairly mediocre return fire?
Now that squadsight gives an accuracy penalty, what is the point in having a long range overwatch shot that will have the overwatch penalty AND the squadsight penalty? And since you cannot move and still use the sniper rifle overwatch.... why wouldnt you just shoot instead of using the overwatch shot...?

And for the few times it is better to use squadsight overwatch (very, very rare...) you get the Killing Zone perk which is much, much, much better.

So why would you take long watch over return fire on any soldier? I am just curious, what are your thoughts?

Lonwatch is pretty awesome. I think that you overlook the synergy between that, weapon upgrades and PCS implants. Having your forward operative covered by a well geared sharpshooter adds to that operative's survivability more than the cremlin's guard does. (The latter does not remove the reason, the former will.)

The two abilities are also situational. Longwatch guards against enemies you don't see yet, while Killzone is meant to be used when there are enemies on the map and you have a pretty good where they'll go on their turn.

It helps so you can park your sniper on high ground and overwatch from there, while the squad keeps moving. With height advantage your hitchances improve quite a bit, offsetting the malus from range.

Hmm, the bit about upgrades and implants is valid. I had been looking at only the perks and the knowledge you would be getting two significant aim penalties. Maybe I will try long watch after all, thank you for the info.
