There's no way or at least no obvious way to defend on this.
I mean, if you're so unlucky that you're missing almost every shot then why not throw some grenades at it for guarenteed damage or do you not bring the grenadiers with you either? I'm not sure why people are complaining about certain enemies...did you immediately rush the story mode exclusive research and objectives that spawn this enemy without doing anything else?
If you played the first XCOM you'd know that the best way to play this game is to do as much side objectives and missions as possible before you're ready to move onto the tougher things. I had the second shotgun by the time I fought the codex and exo suits available, so my character was doing 6-8 damage to it and I grenaded it so it had no cover so my other guys were much more likely to kill it.
Why are you even overwatching against a codex anyway? You have to be up close to initiate the skull jack so wouldn't your men all be close enough to kill it? You did clear out all the aliens before you jacked right?
First codex Action will always be to disable weapons in a wide area, so spread your troops.
Then Shot one time with your strongest shooter, goal is to down a max of HP on first shot.
When hit, the codex Clone himself, but !
The clone get Half of his current hp.
If codex is at 1 HP, he teleport instead of cloning (no HP to share)
Case 1 :
-If you shot hard right at the start, the clone should die immediatly on the next shot, as he don't have lot of HP
Case 2 : Clone as more HP thant your max damage possibility, repeat base process.
Jack can one shot Codex, but surpise butt sex await you :p
As pointed out, you'll want to do the most damage you can in the first shot, then post split neither copy will have much health.
A note of caution. Never attack a codex on an ambush. It will clone ... and the ambush will end. Aliens don't scatter, your squad doesn't take overwatch shots, and then it's the enemies turn where they finally will move (but you no longer have overwatch) and you have two codexs. Learned that the hard way, and you better believe I reloaded. I'll accept a failure, but BS like that I have no reservations of reloading.
i have been hit by the disable weapons effect but that was pointless cause i spread my soldiers out and move in a sweeping motion across the map, generally you only want to be packed together when evacing or if you are setting up overwatch crossfires.
Gatekeepers are the real fun... High armor, high HP and nasty nasty tricks...
True I cried for joy when one of my specialists got an execution kill on one of them. She actually went on to do it 3 more times in my campaign.
