They aren't proximity activated. They must be shot or otherwise damaged (another explosion) to go off.

They are a strong opener against a pod, especially the second or third pod of the map if your reaper is still concealed.

The point of the claymore is to make your Reaper an actual god capable of wiping out an entire late-game pod in a single explosion

A pod is what the small groups of enemies are called.

I use them to have the Reaper sneak up on a squad, place the claymore and then have a grenadier launch a grenade for maximum damage before the pod is even triggered.

TBH they are OP as hell. My reaper and my sniper are bonded so on any assassination mission i have, once i find the target with the reaper, i toss one claymore on the target, one on the ground next to him, use bond ability to give him another action. Then use sting. I have armor piercing rounds so it almost always one shots the target with out being revealed.

Im sure there is a mod or two that provides a proximity mine if thats what your after, but just because X has a name similar to Y real world thing doesn't mean squat in a game

Basic usage:

1. Approach enemies with a Reaper, end turn.
2. Next turn: throw Claymore with your first action and shoot it with your second action. Damage is higher than a grenade, the shot does not reveal the Reaper.

The Claymore can also be detonated with a grenade, dealing damage that's enough to instakill most enemies early game.

When you get Remote Start, you can also combine Claymore with Remote Start for the same effect.

When/if you unlock multiple Claymores, you can combine them and deal even more damage.

Late game you can also get Homing Mine, which attaches the Claymore to an enemy. It seems pointless on the first glance, but it means you can detonate the Claymore by shooting the enemy rather than the Claymore, so you will also deal damage from the shot. Also, Homing Mine can be thrown a much longer distance than a Claymore. And shots with Homing Mine cannot miss, so like even a disoriented poisoned Ranger can hit a shot half across the map, adding shotgun damage to the mine, so it's pretty amazing.

My experience is more:

1. Throw claymore,
2. See no line of sight to claymore
3. curse

I tend to ignore them until I get homing mine. At that point when you find a tricky pod use homing mine on the most dangerous enemy, Next turn throw your second mine at its feet (if you have that ability). Then use Sting on the target of the homing mine, and deal three sets of damage to it while remaining concealed (plus two sets of explosive damage to nearby targets as well).

They are incredibly powerful, save them for when they count. Use them on a whole group of enemies before they spot Xcom to do damage to the whole group before they spread out too far to all be damaged by it at once; use them on tough enemies to break armor. They can be a great way for your reaper to contribute damage to a fight using only a single action while maintaining a forward scouting position on the lookout for other enemies and not revealing herself. (throw it on ground w/ reaper, blow it up by attacking the enemy group with a concealed grenadier, now you damage everyone in the enemy group with both explosions)

They're pretty great but you need to find a good opportunity for them. Can take a whole pod out, but it's very important you shoot it the same turn you throw it so the enemies don't move away.

When the reaper shoots it, they won't be revealed so it can be pretty great to take a whole pod out before any of your troops are seen by the enemy.
