It would seem there was no desire from JS or the midnight suns team to actually make Xcom 3 in the first place.
I joke. But, at the same time.....
Jake Solomon left but other devs stayed (I believe main designedr behind wotc too) it can be both good and bad for the franchize but why judge in advance.. anyway I actually expect X com 3 will be announced along time of Civ 7 release.
"Left voluntarily because he wanted to try something new after 23 years" does not equal "he was fired".
It is possible he walked before he was pushed, so everyone could save face.
We simply won't know the answer to that.
But as JS's own tweets state ... he seemingly does not want to work on XCOM games anymore, either in name or spirit, even now he's 'free' to do so. The rest of the MS team ... well there have been layoffs but it's company wide afaik.
XCOM Legends is coming up in 2024, it's a free mobile spin-off of the series. The game is developed by the Californian studio Iridium Starfish.
XCOM has we knew it's kaput.
