XCOM 2
ric_chec Feb 14, 2019 @ 2:53pm
Crashing on start
When I try to play this game (push play button in the launcher), the game is crashed.
(No mods and successful integrity verification)

I already tried reinstalling directX, Vcredist, and .Net framework.
And I also tried changing nvidia control pannel settings.

Is there any other tips that I may try?

thanks.

p.s:
Every time I checked integrity verification before running this game.
But when I run the verification, after the crashing, the verification reports "1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired".

Go into your documents\my games\ Xcom2 and delete the folders there. It contains savegames and file settings. The program will generate a default new batch of files and hopefully load now.

Also, are you trying to play regular X-Com2 or War of the Chosen? On the launcher you have to switch between modes. Caught me by surprise the first time when I started normal up with WoTC mods installed and selected. Just got to make sure you're starting the right tab.

Thanks for your advise. But unfortunately still game crashed. ....
I tried without any mods and both regular and wotc; both crashed.

Have a look in:
My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\Logs\Launch.log

Scroll up from the bottom to find the first log entry with "crash" in. The log entry immediately before that may give you a clue as (assuming the time stamps are close) that's what was going on when it crashed.

I've seen it in plenty of forums, but in over 200 games never needed to turn off my virus protection ... until this week. I wanted to play Dragon Age Inquisition, and the only way to stop it from crashing on startup was to turn off Avast antivirus. I could turn Avast back on as soon as it loaded, but first time ever doing that. The program is becoming intrusive over the years.

You don't need to completely turn off Avast to play Inquisition. Set an Exclusion for the DA:I directory, mine's
<drive>:\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\*

But yeah, bit rubbish really.

Edit:
To OP: could be ransomware protection (although I thought that only kicked in for people with the Photobooth stuff). See if you can set-up an Exclusion for XCOM 2 to write to its My Games folder.

Thank you for advise.

I ran integrity verification three times before running the game. At first time 2 files failed but at second and third time all file is verified.

This is what i got from logfile

did you try unistalling /reinstalling the game it self?

Quite a bit of time between last event and crash event:

So maybe something to do with saves? Perhaps your AV doesn't like XCOM 2 writing to the Documents folder (characteristic of ransomware)? Try setting an Exception for XCOM 2 in some way.

May this problem be related to sound settings? I didn't touch AV settings in my computer. well... I'll googling it
thanks
Dragon32 Feb 21, 2019 @ 10:20am
I doubt it's sound, there's a big gap between your sound device being initialised (assuming that's what the log entry means) and the crash.

For me there's 00.02 time units between sound device initialisation and the save message. You don't get that "wait for saves to complete" message and crash 05.19 time units after sound device initialisation, which made me conclude it was something to do with save files.

That's pure supposition: I didn't code the Unreal Engine :)
