Catching on fire -- any way to avoid?
So one of my best soldiers (a corporal, 6hp, it's very early game) is standing behind some wooden crates when enemy plasma catches them on fire.

She does not yet have the "Burning" debuff, and has taken no damage yet.

However, anywhere I put the movement cursor, it indicates that she will catch fire from being in the square she's already in.

Does this trigger only on movement? ie, if I just hunker down can I avoid catching ablaze?

Alternately, I could try destroying the burning cover with a grenade prior to moving her, on the thought that cover that does not exist cannot burn?

Any other ideas? I'm playing on Commander/Ironman and have no medkits/medprotocol available to put out the flames if she gets torched, plus it is only the second or third turn of the retaliation mission so there is no way I could finish before she took too much burn damage.

The Stop Drop and Roll mod makes Hunker Down extinguish flames which make total sense to me and doesn't feel overpowered to me even in an iornman game I think it's logical and fixes your problem.

Hahaha that sounds like a great mod, I'll check it out for future playthroughs but want to do this one unmodded. Thanks! :sectoid:

If anyone has thoughts or suggestions that aren't mods, please do post them. Hell, post them even if they are mods but it won't help me on my current run. :)

For the record: I got out of this problem by placing an evac zone right next to the soldier, running her into the evac (caught her on fire) and roping up to the skyranger (put out the fire before she took any damage). So she isn't even wounded but now I have to finish this retaliation mission with three rookies. :shellshock:

Move into water.

It'll only trigger on movement, so it's a perfectly valid strategy to stand there hunkering, shooting, throwing grenades, etc. for a few turns until the fire burns itself out.

Even if your soldier does catch on fire, it's not neccesarily a death sentance. The burning effect will go away by itself after 2-3 turns, and standing in water removes it immediately.

Chris and HandyVac -- THANKS! It sounds totally stupid but I had no idea that moving into water would be a way to deal with fire. :) If I wasn't playing ironman now is when I would go back and re-play that sequence using the new info. :steamfacepalm:

There is a type of armor you can research and equip that makes your soldier immune to fire, acid and poison.
